Patrick Vieira names Arsenal player who must improve
Former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira has questioned Martin Odegaard’s display following Arsenal’s 3-2 home defeat to Manchester United in the Premier League.
It was a disappointing evening for the Gunners, who suffered their first home loss of the season.
The defeat also sparked strong criticism from Vieira, who closely examined the performance of Arsenal’s captain.
The former Crystal Palace manager felt Arsenal struggled to impose themselves at key moments.
Vieira focused much of his attention on Odegaard’s positioning and influence in the game.
Vieira critical of Odegaard approach
The lack of decisive moments from Saka was a concern for the former captain.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Vieira explained why Odegaard’s showing did not fully convince him.
He said: “Odegaard is one of the technical leaders of the team, because of his vision, of his last pass. I would like to see him play higher, between the lines.
“I think at times he plays it too safe, comes too close to the back four. “
Vieira believes Arsenal need more ambition from their captain in advanced areas of the pitch. He stressed that Odegaard should spend more time affecting play near the opponent’s goal.
He added: “You need those type of players closer to the goal.”
Vieira’s comments reflected his view that Arsenal lacked enough threat from central areas. He suggested that Odegaard’s quality is best used higher up the pitch.
Saka also faces scrutiny after quiet night
Vieira also shared his thoughts on Bukayo Saka’s performance against United. The former midfielder felt the winger failed to make enough impact on a big occasion.
He said on Saka: “I think Saka was too quiet. He is one of, if not, the best offensive player. Big games like that you expect him to score and take the team.”
Vieira believes players of Saka’s level should lead by example in important fixtures. He suggested Arsenal needed more direct influence from their wide areas.
Despite the defeat, Arsenal remain top of the Premier League standings. They currently sit first with 50 points from 23 league matches, four points ahead of Manchester City and Aston Villa.
