Big boost for Arsenal with two injured stars back in training ahead of Man Utd game
Arsenal have been handed a double injury boost ahead of the Premier League meeting against Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
The Gunners picked up an impressive 3-1 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League in midweek and therefore booked their spot in the round of 16 of the competition.
The focus will now shift to Sunday’s encounter against United. Arsenal have played out back-to-back goalless league draws and will be eyeing a victory this time around.
Ahead of the game, they have received a double injury boost with Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie back in full training after recovering from muscle and groin injuries.
Manager Mikel Arteta did not confirm their availability for Sunday’s clash but rather said that everyone in the squad will be assessed on Saturday before facing the Red Devils.
Calafiori and Hincapie poised to make squad vs Man Utd
Calafiori has not featured for the Gunners since picking up a training ground injury before the Brighton & Hove Albion game in December. Hincapie got a regular run at left-back owing to this, but the Ecuadorian picked up an injury of his own during the goalless draw against Liverpool.
Arsenal have managed to cope with their absence, with Jurrien Timber and Myles Lewis-Skelly sharing duties at left-back. Timber fared well out of position in the 0-0 draw at Forest, but Arteta has a big decision ahead of a tricky challenge against the Red Devils at the Emirates.
Michael Carrick’s side come into the game high on confidence after dominating Manchester City in a comfortable 2-0 win at Old Trafford. There has been an evident manager bounce, and United will be desperate to pick up their first league victory over Arsenal since December 2017.
If Calafiori and Hincapie are fully fit, it won’t come as a surprise if the former gets the nod to start at left-back. The Italian scored the winner when the two sides met at Old Trafford in August.
Hincapie or Lewis-Skelly could come on as a late substitute, while Timber could be back at right-back, where he is most comfortable. Ben White could drop to the bench in that case.
