Arsenal now interested in signing 11-goal striker, Berta retains "close relationship" with player rep

0 2

Arsenal are exploring the prospect of signing Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez during the summer transfer window, according to ESPN.

The Gunners were linked with a move for the Argentina international last summer, but nothing materialised beyond the speculation.

The club went on to land Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP after a lengthy transfer saga.

The Swede has already netted nine goals in the ongoing campaign but has yet to find the consistency that was anticipated from him on his arrival.

ESPN now report that Arsenal have made informal enquiries to find out whether they can secure the services of Alvarez from Atletico this summer.

Atletico signed Alvarez from Manchester City for around £82 million in August 2024.

It is reported that it would take more than £87m if Atletico open the door to his potential sale.

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta worked for 12 years at Atletico and played a big part in bringing Alvarez to the La Liga outfit two years ago.

Berta retains a close relationship with the player’s representative, Fernando Hidalgo.

Arsenal could make ambitious summer swoop for Alvarez

The 25-year-old had a brilliant debut season with Atletico last term. He netted 29 goals and provided eight assists from 57 appearances in all competitions.

Alvarez may not hit those heights with the La Liga outfit this campaign. The Argentine has notched up 11 goals and five assists from 28 matches, as things stand.

Despite this, Arsenal could still pursue an ambitious summer deal for him. Alvarez perfectly suits Mikel Arteta’s style of play, with his tireless work rate and mobility upfront.

In the current season, he averages 22 passes in La Liga with an 84 percent accuracy. Alvarez has missed only seven big chances and has been a creative outlet with key passes too.

Alvarez netted 17 and 19 goals respectively during his two seasons at Man City. With him entering the prime of his career, he could comfortably hit the 25+ goal tally with regularity.

Berta has had a big influence on Arsenal transfers since his appointment in 2025. The transfer guru could pull off one of the signings of the summer if he can bring in Alvarez from Atletico.

A new striker arrival could coincide with the possible departure of Gabriel Jesus. It has been reported this week that AC Milan and Juventus are weighing up summer bids for the Brazilian.
