Declan Rice explains why goals have dried up for Arsenal striker
Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has spoken out in support of teammate Viktor Gyökeres during a difficult spell in front of goal.
The striker joined the club in the summer following an impressive season during which he scored 54 goals and provided 13 assists for Sporting CP.
Those numbers earned him the Gerd Müller award at the Ballon d’Or, recognising him as the best striker.
Expectations were high when the Swedish international joined Arsenal, but his time in north London has not been smooth so far.
Gyökeres has scored seven goals across all competitions, with five of those coming in the Premier League.
He is currently enduring a run of eight league matches without a goal from open play. In Arsenal’s recent 3-2 win over Bournemouth, the striker failed to register a single shot.
Despite the criticism, Rice has made it clear that Gyökeres brings far more to the team than goals alone.
The England international explained that the striker’s role often goes unnoticed by many watching.
Rice explains Gyökeres’ impact beyond goals
Rice admitted that life is not easy for Gyökeres during matches, especially with constant attention from defenders.
He pointed out that the striker is often marked by two players, which limits his chances in front of goal.
“It’s tough for him because he’s got two defenders on him all game, so he has to use his strength or whatever he can to help the team.
“With that first goal, without him making that run from Gabi [Martinelli’s] flick and holding it, and setting it to Martin, the goal would not have happened for us to turn the game on its head.”
Rice stressed that moments like these show how important Gyökeres is to Arsenal’s attacking play.
His movement, strength, and link-up play often create space for others to shine.
The midfielder also shared his view from the training ground, where Gyökeres continues to impress daily.
According to Rice, the striker’s ability in front of goal remains clear whenever he gets the chance.
Arsenal trust striker despite dry spell
“I see this guy every day. I see his finishing, how hard he hits a ball. When that space arrives for him and the ball’s arriving at his feet to score goals, he will 100 per cent score.
“But defenders in the Premier League want to be able stop Viktor Gyokeres because he’s one of the best strikers in the world – naturally when you play the best players.”
Rice believes that strong defending is a sign of respect, rather than a concern for the striker’s quality.
He added that top players always face extra pressure from opposition teams.
Arsenal currently sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
Rice made it clear that Gyökeres has played a key role in putting the team in that position.
“Trust me, he’s doing unbelievable for us. We wouldn’t be where we are without him. So let’s keep trying to feed him and get him on the scoresheet. But if not, the way he’s helping the team is massive.”
Arsenal will now turn their attention to a huge test against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners remain focused as they continue their push towards lifting the Premier League trophy.
