Kepa Arizzabalaga points out major Arsenal problem after penalty thriller
Kepa Arrizabalaga has acknowledged that Arsenal must improve their game management, particularly in preventing late goals.
The goalkeeper was speaking to Sky Sports after Arsenal reached the League Cup semi-finals. The Gunners drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace after full-time before winning 8-7 on penalties.
Arsenal started the game well and looked in control for long spells. However, Palace found a way back into the contest late on and forced penalties.
Kepa reflects on Palace’s response
Speaking after the match, Kepa praised Arsenal’s overall performance. He also pointed out how Palace adjusted their approach during the game.
“I think we play so well and then they changed, they adapt a little bit.”
The Spaniard felt the shift in Palace’s play caused Arsenal problems late on. Despite this, he believed the team showed strong character to get through.
Kepa then turned his focus to an issue Arsenal must address going forward. He admitted that conceding late goals has become a worrying pattern.
“It’s something we have to improve; we have been conceding in the last minute.”
Arsenal have seen similar situations in recent matches. They conceded late goals against Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Those moments have cost the team control and added pressure late on.
It is a problem Arsenal will need to solve as the season progresses. The goalkeeper stressed the importance of learning from these situations.
Penalty heroics and Chelsea clash ahead
Kepa also spoke about his role during the penalty shootout. He made a key save as Arsenal edged past Palace.
“You have to keep your cool, be focused and don’t lose your focus.”
His calm approach helped Arsenal secure their place in the next round. The shootout was tense, with both sides converting several penalties. Arsenal will now face Chelsea in the semi-finals of the competition. The tie will be played over two legs.
The first leg is set to take place at Stamford Bridge on January 14, with the second leg played at the Emirates Stadium on February 3. The winner will face either Newcastle United or Manchester City (the other semifinal) at Wembley Stadium in the final on March 22.
