Mikel Arteta drops major admission about his future at Arsenal
Mikel Arteta has openly spoken about his long-term dream of reaching a thousand matches as Arsenal manager.
The Spaniard took charge of the club on December 20, 2019, beginning a new chapter during a difficult period for the Gunners.
When Arsenal face David Moyes’ Everton, Arteta will mark six years in charge of the North London side. It is a milestone that highlights his steady rise and growing influence at the club.
Arteta, in an interview with Sky Sports, admitted that managing Arsenal for such a long time would be a personal honour and a major career achievement.
Speaking on the idea of managing a thousand games, he shared his honest feelings about the challenge.
“I would love to do that, ” he said.
He explained that such longevity demands mental strength, patience, and the right people around the manager.
“You need to get a very thin skin and a lot of experience and a lot of good people around you. Because if I do it, I want to do it with the energy that I have today. With much more knowledge, probably, than I have today.”
The Arsenal manager stressed that energy and enjoyment are key to lasting success in football management. He made it clear that passion for the job remains central to his daily work at the club.
“But really enjoying what I do. I think to respect this game and the profession, you have to really, really enjoy it. And I love what I do.”
Arteta speaks on longevity and ambition
Arteta’s comments reflect his strong bond with Arsenal and his desire to grow with the club. Despite the pressure that comes with managing a top Premier League side, he remains focused on progress.
His reign has included clear improvements in style, squad balance, and overall identity. However, criticism has followed him due to the club’s lack of major trophies since the FA Cup win in 2020.
Arteta addressed this topic with honesty, recognising how football success is often judged.
He admitted that trophies remain the main measure for players and managers alike.
“Whether you’re a player or a manager, at the end, it’s when you win the major trophies that you get that recognition.”
The Arsenal boss did not shy away from the reality of modern football standards. He also pointed out that recognition does not always reflect the full picture of a manager’s work.
Arsenal boss praises overlooked managers
Arteta took time to praise fellow managers who perform well without elite resources. He highlighted those who deliver strong results over many seasons despite clear limits.
The Spaniard believes such work often deserves greater respect within the game.
“But in my opinion, I think there are managers, for example, in this league, that they’ve done an incredible job, not only for a season, but for many seasons.”
He explained that some clubs lack the tools to chase top positions.
“With clubs, they don’t have the capacity to fight for the Champions League spots. Probably they’ve done a better job than other managers.”
Arteta feels trophies sometimes hide the value of long-term development and stability. He believes many important parts of management are rarely given enough attention.
“So at the end, we value a lot the fact of the trophies. “But there are many other things in management that are so important. And so they don’t value them as much.”
Arsenal will now head to Hill Dickinson Stadium to face Everton, as they aim to stay top of the Premier League table.
