"Spectacular": Mikel Arteta blown away by £83m Arsenal duo after 3-0 victory vs Club Brugge
Arsenal returned to winning ways with a convincing 3-0 victory over Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Manager Mikel Arteta made five changes from the 2-1 Premier League defeat to Aston Villa last weekend.
The Gunners opened the scoring in the 25th minute after a stellar solo goal from Noni Madueke.
Madueke dribbled his way past a couple of players before unleashing a sensational strike from outside the box.
The Englishman doubled the club’s advantage shortly after the break with an easy header at the far post.
Gabriel Martinelli put the gloss on the performance with a sublime long-range curling strike.
In the process, Martinelli became the first Arsenal player to score in five straight Champions League games.
Speaking after the win, Arteta said that Madueke and Martinelli were ‘outstanding’ as a pair and praised their ‘spectacular’ finishes.
He told TNT Sports (via BBC Sport): “Madueke and Martinelli were outstanding today, the level of threat and two finishes spectacular.”
In his post-match presser conference, Arteta added: “Unbelievable goal [on Madueke]. When you talk about individual quality, individual action, a magic moment, that’s it.
“A player that is able to pick the ball that far, dribble past people and finish with the quality and the power that he’s done.
“The same as Martinelli as well, I think at this level you want to win games, you need individual players to step up and to do something different.
“So, I’m very happy because now we have some players back in the front line and you can tell how much better we have done.”
Madueke has been impressive in the Champions League since his injury comeback, scoring three goals in his last two appearances for Arsenal.
Martinelli has been a revelation in Europe. Despite being in and out of the XI, he has managed six goal contributions from just five appearances this term.
The pair, valued at £83 million by Transfermarkt, were brilliant in Brugge, and Arteta has a big selection headache for the weekend’s league game.
The Gunners host bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Emirates Stadium.
Bukayo Saka should return to the XI on the right wing, having come on as a late substitute yesterday.
Arteta is likely to pick one of Madueke or Martinelli on the left wing, given Leandro Trossard remains doubtful after picking up a fresh knock.
