"Really good": Arteta hints injured £118m Arsenal duo could return vs Chelsea
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has hinted that Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres could be fit to face Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Gunners returned to winning ways with a convincing 4-1 league victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium last weekend.
Eberechi Eze grabbed the headlines with his maiden career hat-trick, and the fans will be hoping that he can sustain his form going forward.
Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli returned to the squad after respective injuries last weekend, and Martin Odegaard could do so against Bayern Munich in the Champions League tomorrow.
However, the game will come too soon for Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres.
When asked about the current condition of Havertz and Gyokeres, Arteta said that the duo, valued at a combined £118 million by Transfermarkt, are doing ‘really good’.
The Spanish tactician added that the attacking pair will undergo a repeat scan and hinted at the possibility of the duo making the squad for the Chelsea game.
He said: “Really good, both of them. In the next few days, they’re going to have a repeat scan to see how everything is and where we can push them for the weekend.”
Arsenal could receive potential double boost for Chelsea game
The Gunners have been dependent on Mikel Merino to lead the line in the injury absence of Gyokeres, Havertz and Jesus. The 29-year-old has impressed as a makeshift striker.
Merino may not be everyone’s favourite, but the Spaniard has chipped in with nine goals and four assists from 19 appearances in the centre-forward position since February.
He looks poised to continue in the role against Bayern. He should be a front-runner to start against the Blues too, as Gyokeres or Havertz may not be rushed into the first XI.
Gyokeres has had a short injury lay-off and was very close to making his comeback in the north London derby last weekend. Hence, he is more likely to be involved on Sunday.
Havertz, on the other hand, may not make an appearance against Chelsea. The German had a relapse of his knee injury, and Arsenal must handle his situation with extra caution.
