13 duels & 6 fouls won, 3 tackles: £39m Arsenal star had his best performance this season vs Olympiacos
Arsenal secured a 2-0 victory over Olympiacos at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.
The Gunners were favourites to beat the Greek outfit with home advantage, but they had to work hard for the result.
Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring early after Viktor Gyokeres’ effort hit the woodwork.
Arsenal had chances to double the lead and were guilty of squandering clear-cut chances.
Bukayo Saka eventually put the game to bed with a second goal in the 92nd minute.
Gunners manager Mikel Arteta made six changes from the 2-1 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League.
Myles Lewis-Skelly got the nod over Riccardo Calafiori at left-back and produced an impressive performance.
The Englishman should have had an assist in the third minute itself.
He delivered a fabulous cross for Martinelli, who had a free header in the box, but he somehow missed the target.
Aside from this, the 19-year-old completed 87 percent of his passes with 88 touches.
He was superb in the defensive scheme of things. Lewis-Skelly won the most duels (13) while inducing the most fouls (six).
The Gunners graduate also made five clearances alongside three tackles and three recoveries.
The £39 million-rated star undoubtedly had his best performance of the season in what was just his second start.
Lewis-Skelly has played second fiddle to Calafiori for the left-back position in the Premier League this season so far.
The latter has capitalised with three goal contributions, but can’t rest on his laurels with Lewis-Skelly knocking on the door.
The teenager was one of Arsenal’s shining lights last term, and will be aiming to capitalise if Calafiori has a dip in league form.
Arsenal host London rivals West Ham United in the Premier League at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Hammers have hampered the Gunners’ title prospects with victories in their last two trips to north London.
Mikel Arteta’s side will be determined to pick up a victory this time around to climb to the top of the standings temporarily.
If Arsenal were to do so, Liverpool would have to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge later in the day to reclaim the first position.
