"Fully deserved it": Arteta loved what Arsenal star did vs Newcastle, says "pity he did not score"

0 1

Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 2-1 comeback triumph over Newcastle United on the road last weekend.

The Gunners were the dominant side in the opening half, but they were denied the opener after a couple of top-class saves from Nick Pope.

The Magpies eventually took the lead through Nick Woltemade in the 34th minute, but Arsenal fought back valiantly to pick up a victory.

Mikel Merino scored an 84th-minute equaliser before Gabriel Magalhaes made the headlines with a dramatic 96th-minute winning goal.

Viktor Gyokeres did not make a direct goal contribution at St James’ Park, but he had a good physical battle against the Magpies’ defence.

There were multiple occasions where the referee ignored fouls, but Gyokeres kept on going. He had a good chance towards the end before an unfortunate slip.

Speaking in today’s press conference, Arteta said that he loved how Gyokeres stood up to the physical challenge posed, and it’s a pity he did not score at the end.

He told Arsenal.com: “I loved it. I absolutely loved how he took it. He went on board, not a single moment when he was showing frustration.

“I told him that you’re going to get some decisions, some others not, stand up, you’re going to have two or three players around you in many moments, the ball is in the air, and a lot is going to happen.

“But I loved his reaction, I loved the way he handled the situation emotionally, and also because he was involved in a lot of dangerous moments that he created.

“He was very much involved in them. It’s a pity that he didn’t score a goal at the end, because in my opinion, he fully deserved it.”

Gyokeres has scored three goals in his first eight appearances for the Gunners. He has the opportunity to add to his tally against Olympiacos in the Champions League tomorrow.

Arsenal host the Greek outfit at the Emirates Stadium, where Gyokeres has already found his feet. All of his goals have come in front of the club’s faithful.

The Swede has barely received clear-cut chances to score at Arsenal, but there are signs that his teammates are starting to understand his movements.

Gyokeres also looks to be getting fitter and sharper with every passing game, having joined the Gunners in the final phase of pre-season due to the long transfer saga.

Olympiacos have beaten Arsenal in their last three trips to the Emirates, but the Gunners should seal a comfortable victory over the Greek side this time around.

Hopefully, Gyokeres can get back on the scoresheet to boost his confidence before the London derby against West Ham United at the Emirates on Saturday.
