Arsenal striker Viktor Gyökeres has claimed the 2025 Gerd Müller award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, following a stunning scoring campaign.

The Swedish forward was recognised for his prolific form, which saw him end last season as the most clinical striker in Europe.

His 54 goals in 52 matches stood out as the highest across club and international football.

Award recognises Europe’s top scorers

The honour, first introduced in 2021, is presented each year to the player with the most goals. It takes into account strikes scored in European competitions as well as for national teams. The prize was once known as Striker of the Year and later Best Striker Award.

Gyökeres, 27, joined Arsenal in the summer of 2025 after a memorable spell with Sporting. His goals carried the Portuguese side to the league title and also the Taça de Portugal.

He further impressed by topping the scoring charts in the 2024/25 Nations League.

In his acceptance speech, the forward was full of appreciation for his former club. “Thanks to everyone at Sporting last season for making this possible for me,” said Gyökeres.

“We had an amazing season together winning both the league and the club. Those were incredible memories created together. To be able to stand here is an amazing feeling. Since I started playing football I was hungry for goals. It’s such an honor to win this award.”

Arsenal’s summer signing makes fast start

His record-breaking year made him one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe. Arsenal secured his signature in the summer as part of their plans to strengthen their attack.

Since arriving in north London, Gyökeres has already shown signs of continuing his scoring run. He has found the net three times in his first five league appearances for Arsenal this season.

The striker’s award highlights not only his incredible consistency in front of goal but also his impact on both club and international stages.

From Lisbon to London, his hunger for goals remains unchanged, and he is quickly making his mark in the Premier League.

Gyökeres will now look to add to his tally in England while aiming to help Arsenal push for trophies. His recognition at the Ballon d’Or reflects a forward at the peak of his career, hungry for more success.
