Arsenal star reflects on his time at the club after a great start

0 9

Riccardo Calafiori says he is relishing life at Arsenal after a strong start to the season that has already earned him the club’s Player of the Month award for August.

The Italian defender arrived at the Emirates last summer in a £42m deal from Bologna, with questions raised over his injury history, but he has quickly established himself as Mikel Arteta’s first-choice left-back.

After starting all of Arsenal’s league fixtures so far, he admits the early recognition means a lot. “It’s special,” Calafiori said. “Everyone’s a good guy, we’re friends, and I feel really comfortable here. Last season wasn’t easy, but I came back this summer with a fire inside me. I couldn’t wait to start again.”

Supporters have voted him the standout performer for August, collecting 52 per cent of the vote ahead of Jurrien Timber, Martin Zubimendi and Gabriel.

His consistency and composure have been key to Arsenal’s solid defensive record, while his ability to push forward has also caught the eye. “Playing in the Premier League is the dream for so many players, so now I just want to enjoy it and show what I can do consistently,” he said.

In an interview with Versus, Calafiori reflected on the differences between playing in Italy and in England, particularly when it comes to fan culture.

“In Italy, the fans sing non-stop from the first to the last minute, the atmosphere is special,” he explained.

“In England it’s different, maybe they sing less, but the whole stadium is involved. When you score or make a big tackle, the energy hits you straight away. In Italy it’s more about the ultras, but here it feels like the whole city is behind you.”

He also spoke about his admiration for the squad he has joined, calling the Arsenal dressing room “a group of friends” and noting how much easier that has made his adaptation.

Calafiori believes this season is his chance to show fans more of his personality on the pitch. “Last season they only saw a little of what I can do,” he said. “I want to show much more this year. I want people to see how much I care, how much I fight.”

The 23-year-old’s confidence is growing both on and off the pitch. He admitted his move to London encouraged him to explore fashion and self-expression, something he sees as part of modern football culture.

But his main focus remains on cementing his place in Arteta’s side. “I just want to keep improving and help the team,” he said. “If I can stay fit, I know I can give a lot more.”
