Arsenal’s Sagoe Jr up against Chelsea youngster for August’s PL2 Player of the Month
Arsenal youngster Charles Sagoe Jr has been nominated for August’s Premier League 2 Player of the Month award.
The English forward has been brilliant for Max Porter’s side, registering at least a goal involvement in each of Arsenal U21s’ first three league games.
He scored the young Gunners’ first goal on the opening matchday 3-2 defeat at Fulham, before registering a goal and an assist in the 2-2 home draw with Nottingham Forest. His goal against Forest is in contention for Arsenal’s Goal of the Month.
Sagoe Jr then assisted Seb Ferdinand for the only goal as Arsenal recorded their first league win, beating Brighton & Hove Albion with a solitary goal at Meadow Park.
The 21-year-old faces stiff competition from seven other youngsters for August’s Premier League 2 Player of the Month, including Chelsea’s Shumaira Mheuka.
Mheuka scored a hat-trick in the Blues’ opening match win over defending champions Manchester City and was on the scoresheet in the 5-0 rout of Newcastle United.
Leicester City and Brighton have the most nominees. Mirsad Ali and Kevon Gray were nominated from the Foxes, while Shane Nti and Charlie Tasker were chosen from the Seagulls.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Reiss-Alexander Russell-Denny and Leeds United forward Harry Gray are the other nominees.
The Premier League Football Development Panel selects the award’s nominees and will also determine the winner, who will be announced later this week.
Sagoe Jr spent the first half of last season with League Two side Shrewsbury Town before he was recalled in January.
The left-winger joined Arsenal from Fulham in July 2015 and signed his first professional contract in 2022.
He has been named in the first team’s matchday squad on three occasions, including once in the Premier League, but has yet to debut.
