'He was him for me': Lewis-Skelly says he was a big admirer of former Man Utd star
Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly has said that he was a big admirer of former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba growing up.
The 18-year-old has had a rampant rise with the Gunners over the past year. He made 39 appearances in his debut campaign and also earned three caps with England.
The left-back has now established himself as a key player under manager Mikel Arteta, and could have a big role to play in the Gunners’ Premier League title pursuit.
Arsenal are scheduled to face holders Liverpool on the road tomorrow, and ahead of the game, Lewis-Skelly has admitted that he was a big admirer of Pogba growing up.
He said on Sky Sports: “Paul Pogba, that was my guy! He was him for me. Of course [he was underrated]. Listen, I could be here talking about my man for a long time.”
Pogba had a mixed career during his time in England with Manchester United. He managed 39 goals and 51 assists from 226 appearances before leaving on a free transfer.
Injuries largely hampered his second stint with Juventus. He was released while serving an 18-month ban for doping. Pogba has now found a new home at AS Monaco.
The Frenchman has yet to make the matchday squad at the Principality outfit. He has personally admitted that he won’t make his debut until he raises his standards.
At 32, Pogba still has a lot to offer, and hopefully, he can quickly find his feet on his comeback.
Meanwhile, Arsenal will be aiming to beat Liverpool at Anfield for the first time in 13 years on Sunday. They came close to ending the streak in 2023, but squandered a two-goal advantage (2-2).
Lewis-Skelly has been a substitute in the first two games of the campaign for Riccardo Calafiori, but we won’t be surprised if there is a straight swap with the club graduate getting the nod to start.
The teenager is much better defensively compared to Calafiori, and could be picked in the starting XI to try and nullify the threat of Mohamed Salah, who has been a nemesis for the Gunners.
