‘My observation during pre-season’ - Jamie Carragher explains threats to Arsenal title ambitions he’s noticed

0 1

Arsenal are hoping to go one better in the Premier League title race this term after finishing second in each of the last three campaigns, and they will fancy their chances.

The Gunners have added Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard to their squad so far this summer, and they may not be done yet.

Arsenal could look to sign one more attacker before the window ends to further strengthen their firepower.

While manager Mikel Arteta badly wants to win the title, Jamie Carragher believes there are internal threats that could stop them.

“My observation during pre-season is that one of Arsenal’s biggest threats could be to themselves,” he told the Daily Telegraph.

“It was surprising to hear about a section of fans booing when Arsenal lost a pre-season friendly to Villarreal.

“If they carry the baggage of recent near-misses, it will be self-defeating. Pre-season is about conditioning and experimentation, not results. You take the positives from wins, and brush off the significance of defeats because it really does not matter.

“Arteta’s pre-season altercation with Tottenham defender Pedro Porro was another sign that the coach will be heading into this season wanting maximum intensity on and off the pitch. It remains to be seen if that is energising or energy-sapping.”

Arsenal fans have a key role to play if their team is to win the title in 2025-26, and being negative whenever things do not go as expected on the pitch will not help matters.

They need to support the players and Arteta through thick and thin this term, and the onus is also on them to turn the Emirates Stadium into a fortress.

Clubs need to be scared of visiting the Arsenal home ground, and the supporters are the only ones who can make that happen.

They need to respectfully make the atmosphere hostile to opposition players from the moment their team bus enters the ground without breaking the law.

The Gunners have some of the best fans in the world and they deserve to be rewarded with a smile at the end of this season after 21 years of title drought.
