Ballon d’Or surprise as Arsenal secure double nomination
Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Viktor Gyökeres have both been shortlisted for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, football’s most prestigious individual award.
The annual accolade recognises the best male footballer over the previous season.
Journalists from across the globe cast their votes to determine the winner, based on performances at both club and international level.
This is Rice’s second nomination, following his inclusion in the 2024 edition where he placed 26th.
The 26-year-old enjoyed a standout campaign for Arsenal in 2024/25, earning the club’s Player of the Season award.
In addition to his ten assists in all competitions, Rice was also a finalist for both the Premier League and PFA Player of the Year honours.
His displays in Europe helped him earn a place in the UEFA Champions League Team of the Season.
The England midfielder’s consistency and influence in the centre of the park were central to Arsenal’s campaign under Mikel Arteta.
Gyökeres earns first Ballon d’Or nomination
Meanwhile, summer arrival Viktor Gyökeres is among the Ballon d’Or nominees for the very first time, following an extraordinary season with Sporting Lisbon.
Before his move to the Emirates, the Swedish striker netted 54 goals and provided 13 assists.
He helped his Portuguese side secure a domestic league and cup double, while also finishing as top scorer in the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League.
His goal-scoring feats attracted attention across Europe and played a key role in Arsenal’s decision to secure his signature this summer.
Both players will aim to guide Mikel Arteta’s side to silverware this season, as Arsenal look to end a three-year wait for a major trophy.
They kick off their Premier League campaign away at Manchester United, where they will hope to make a powerful statement on opening day.
The Ballon d’Or ceremony will once again celebrate the achievements of football’s top performers over the past year. The winner will be revealed later this year.
