Arsenal are plotting move to sign 6ft 3in French star after Gyökeres - report

0 1

Arsenal could sign a central defender during the ongoing transfer window.

The Gunners have had a productive summer with six signings thus far.

The club recently confirmed the much-awaited arrival of Viktor Gyökeres.

There could be more additions to the squad before the transfer deadline on September 1.

A left-sided playmaker could be signed. Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze is the prime target for the role.

Fabrizio Romano claims that the Gunners have now made ‘initial contact’ with Rennes to express an interest in signing 20-year-old Jeremy Jacquet.

The London giants like the centre-back who recently signed a new contract until June 2029.

A deal could be pursued if there is a possible outgoing before the window concludes.

Jacquet could be signed if Jakub Kiwior leaves Arsenal

Kiwior has been Arsenal’s regular centre-back deputy behind William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes. His position may not change next season unless one of them is unavailable or needs to be rested.

As a result, the Poland international has opened the door for a potential exit. Manager Mikel Arteta would prefer to keep him, but the hierarchy could be open to selling the defender for a premium fee.

In that case, the club could pursue a cost-effective replacement. The Gunners could sign Jacquet following his breakthrough at Rennes during the backend of the 2024/25 campaign.

The 20-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan with Clermont Foot. He was recalled at the turn of the year and was an assured starter in the heart of their defence when fit to play.

Jacquet won an impressive 61 percent of his duels last campaign with 2.4 tackles, 2.5 interceptions and 3.9 clearances per outing. He played a big part as Rennes steered clear of the drop zone.

He had a passing accuracy of 85 percent, which is quite good, given Rennes had limited possession last term. It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will pursue a deal for the 6ft 3in right-footed star.
