North London derby set! But Arteta's post-match words hint at bigger plans ahead

Mikel Arteta expressed satisfaction with Arsenal’s pre-season progress after their 3-2 win over Newcastle United in Singapore, while also addressing the arrival of Viktor Gyokeres and the emergence of 15-year-old Max Dowman.

Gyokeres was presented to supporters before the match, receiving a loud reception after completing his transfer from Sporting.

Arteta described the deal as a key step in strengthening the squad. “We are very happy to have Viktor with us,” he said. “It took time to make it happen, but from the first conversation he was clear about wanting to join us.”

Arteta believes the new addition will raise standards in the group. “We are improving the quality and depth of the team,” he said. “The players are excited and you can feel the lift in the environment.”

He praised the club’s hierarchy and scouting team for moving quickly to complete the signing. “Finding the right player is one thing,” he said. “Securing the transfer early in the window shows the work the club has done behind the scenes.”

Gyokeres is unlikely to feature immediately as Arsenal continue to monitor his fitness. “He has not trained with us yet,” Arteta explained. “He has done all the medical checks, but it is important to get him ready before pushing him in.”

Dowman’s performance was another highlight, as the academy midfielder won the decisive late penalty converted by Martin Odegaard. “What he did today is special,” Arteta said. “At 15, to show that composure against an opponent like Newcastle is not common.”

Arteta credited the support structure around Dowman for helping him settle. “He has a strong family and a good academy environment,” he said. “That allows him to make the most of these opportunities.”

The manager also provided updates on other players. Riccardo Calafiori left the pitch with a minor issue, while new signing Cristhian Mosquera was rested as he builds fitness after a busy summer.

Martin Zubimendi’s display in midfield earned praise, with Arteta noting his intelligence and quick decision-making.

Arsenal now turn their attention to Thursday’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur in Hong Kong, the first north London derby ever staged outside the UK.
