Arteta's clear message on recruitment needs from pre-season

0 1

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal’s summer business has “brought new energy” to the squad — but insists the club are still not finished in the transfer market.

Speaking to reporters in Singapore ahead of Arsenal’s friendly against AC Milan, the Spaniard welcomed the signings of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard and Noni Madueke, but made it clear that more players are likely to arrive before the Premier League returns next month.

“In terms of numbers, we are short,” Arteta said. “We have to improve the depth and quality of the squad. We are constantly looking in the market and we are working on things.”

The manager was especially pleased with the attitude of the new arrivals. “It’s like shaking the tree again,” he said. “They bring new excitement, new energy. I think everybody feels the heights have to go to a different level — and that’s what we’re seeking.”

Arsenal have been linked with further moves, including for Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres and Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera. Arteta did not name names, but strongly hinted that more incomings are in the pipeline.

“We’re not there yet,” he said. “We still need to do a few things. We’re trying to do it in the right way, and hopefully we’ll have more to announce before the season starts.”

On Zubimendi, who joined from Real Sociedad after a long pursuit, Arteta was glowing in his assessment.

“We’re all very impressed with what we’ve seen over the last 7–10 days,” he said. “Once you see him daily — his personality, his character — it’s clear how much he’ll bring. He turned down very good opportunities to come here.”

Arteta also confirmed Gabriel has returned to training after a brief injury absence and played in a behind-closed-doors game against Watford. “He looks in good shape,” he said. “He showed his commitment with his new contract. Now we want consistency from him this season.”

Despite a weather-disrupted training session earlier, the manager praised the welcome the squad has received in Singapore. “The support has been incredible,” he said. “We want to give them something to cheer about.”

Arsenal will face AC Milan on Wednesday before playing Newcastle United later in the week.
