Arsenal to cut ties with €20m defender with 40 international caps

0 4

Takehiro Tomiyasu has left Arsenal after reaching an agreement with the club to end his contract early, reports BBC Sport.

The Japanese international played only six minutes of football last season due to a long-term knee injury.

He underwent surgery in February and is expected to be sidelined for another five months during his recovery.

Tomiyasu had also missed the start of the previous season due to another knee issue that required surgery in 2023.

The 26-year-old had one year left on his contract, but both sides have now reached a settlement to terminate the deal.

He joined Arsenal in 2021 from Serie A side Bologna for €20 million plus add-ons.

Tomiyasu made 79 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions over three seasons. He featured regularly when fit, but injuries limited his impact.

Defender eyes new chapter as Arsenal plan ahead

The 40-cap Japanese international defender will focus on completing his rehabilitation before looking for a new club.

Tomiyasu is renowned for his solid defending, versatility, and discipline. His qualities could be useful to clubs requiring defensive stability and experience.

Arsenal are already exploring new options at the back as they prepare for the new campaign.

Valencia centre-back Cristhian Mosquera and Ajax’s Jorrel Hato are two of the players under consideration.

Manager Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his squad and fix areas that have limited success in past seasons.

Arteta aims to assemble a team capable of competing for major trophies after several near misses.

Tomiyasu’s exit frees up space in the defensive department for new additions and future planning.

Although injuries disrupted his time at Arsenal, Tomiyasu leaves with respect for his commitment and work ethic.
