Interest mounts as Arsenal starlet's deal hangs in balance
Arsenal are looking to step up contract negotiations with Ethan Nwaneri as they try to secure the future of one of the club’s most talented academy graduates.
The 18-year-old midfielder signed his first professional contract shortly after turning 17, but that deal is due to expire in the summer of 2026.
Until his 18th birthday in March, Arsenal were legally restricted from offering him a long-term deal, which partially explains the delay in meaningful negotiations.
Sources close to the discussions remain optimistic that an extension will eventually be agreed, but the club knows they cannot afford to allow the situation to drift.
Nwaneri is keen to remain at Arsenal and is said to feel a deep connection with the club, having been on the club’s books since pre-academy level.
His development has been carefully handled by Mikel Arteta, who is a strong believer in the teenager’s long-term potential.
Despite a slight reduction in minutes towards the end of last season, Nwaneri still featured 37 times in all competitions, contributing nine goals and two assists.
That involvement, combined with his strong showing at the Under-21 European Championship, has attracted interest from clubs in the Premier League and abroad.
Arsenal do not want to sell, regardless of the financial uplift such a move could bring in light of profit and sustainability rules.
The club instead view Nwaneri as central to their long-term plans and are determined to reach an agreement that secures his future in North London.
Berta, along with director of football operations James King, is now leading the effort to get the deal over the line.
While Arsenal continue to focus on incoming signings, including Cristhian Mosquera, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard, Nwaneri’s contract situation is being handled with equal urgency.
There is also a wider context at play.
With new attacking reinforcements under consideration, including Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze, Arsenal will need to ensure that Nwaneri’s pathway to regular minutes remains clear.
The presence of fellow teenage talent Max Dowman adds further complexity, with both youngsters occupying similar central roles.
For now, Arsenal remain calm but vigilant, knowing that failure to act decisively this summer could leave them exposed come January, when Nwaneri becomes eligible to speak with foreign clubs.
