Arsenal decide to wait: £85m star's future clarity comes in August

0 1

Arsenal have put a pause on their pursuit of Real Madrid forward Rodrygo Goes, despite holding early talks with his representatives and identifying him as a major target for the summer window.

The Gunners remain keen on the Brazilian, who has emerged as a top candidate to join Mikel Arteta’s frontline alongside Bukayo Saka.

Rodrygo has long been admired at the Emirates, with sporting director Andrea Berta viewing him as a potential statement signing for the club’s next phase of evolution.

Initial contact with the player’s entourage was made before the end of last season, and Arsenal are prepared to sanction a bid that could exceed €90 million.

However, the North Londoners have chosen to delay any formal approach until after the Club World Cup, following a request from Rodrygo’s camp to pause negotiations.

The 24-year-old is currently with Madrid at the tournament and wants full focus on delivering for the club before making any decisions about his future.

Once the competition ends, Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso is expected to hold direct talks with the player to clarify his role and the club’s intentions.

If Madrid are unable to guarantee regular football — particularly in Rodrygo’s preferred left-sided role — the forward is open to leaving, with Arsenal seen as his preferred destination.

Arsenal believe Rodrygo’s versatility across the front line would add significant value to Arsenal’s squad, especially with exits expected in the attacking unit.

The likes of Reiss Nelson and Fabio Vieira have uncertain futures, while Gabriel Martinelli is attracting interest from abroad.

Internally, Rodrygo has been discussed as a high-end solution capable of lifting Arsenal’s attacking options across a long campaign.

Despite occasional standout moments at Madrid — including 14 goals and 9 assists last season — he has struggled for consistent starts due to the presence of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Jude Bellingham.

The situation has led to frustration in Rodrygo’s camp, with his father and agent voicing concerns privately, a move that reportedly upset Madrid officials.

Sources close to Madrid now believe the club would not block a sale, provided a suitable offer arrives.

For now, Arsenal are willing to bide their time.

With other attacking targets like Nico Williams and Anthony Gordon no longer priorities, Rodrygo has emerged as the marquee name.

A deal remains very much alive — but it will not accelerate until August.
