£68m star wants to join Arsenal after holiday, he has "one goal in mind" - report
Arsenal are likely to accelerate their pursuit of a marquee striker in the coming days.
The Gunners have been active in the transfer market over the past week.
They have already secured deals for Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Christian Norgaard. Formal announcements are expected shortly.
The club are also in ‘very advanced‘ negotiations to sign Valencia centre-back Cristhian Mosquera.
A marquee striker could be the next target, and Correio da Manha (page 29) claim that Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres has his sights on joining the club.
The Swede is about to complete the final days of his holiday. He has just ‘one goal in mind’, and that is to ‘leave Sporting and sign for Arsenal’ this summer.
Arsenal have reportedly made an informal bid of £47 million for the striker, but Sporting CP want at least £68m to part ways with the former Coventry City man.
The Gunners are prepared to submit a revised proposal to sign the 27-year-old.
Arsenal need to purchase new striker before pre-season tour
The Gunners have already bolstered their ranks with a quality holding midfielder in Zubimendi.
Arrizabalaga and Norgaard should act as good backup options in goal and midfield. Mosquera looks like a big talent and should provide more assurance in the central defensive department.
Sporting director Andrea Berta has done a brilliant job thus far and must now focus on securing an elite centre-forward before the club depart for their pre-season tour of Asia on July 19.
Gyokeres has given the green light to join the Gunners this summer, but the club still have RB Leipzig sensation Benjamin Sesko as a priority for the number nine role ahead of the Swede.
In our view, Arsenal can’t drag the striker saga until late July or August. They must find a quick solution over the next week or so such that the new signing can report for pre-season training.
The Gunners have a hectic league schedule to start with. They are set to face Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle United in four of the opening six league matches.
With such a hard-looking fixture list, Arsenal must have their marquee striker in the best form and shape. Hopefully, the hierarchy can take the final decision on whom to sign soon.
