Arsenal star agrees new long-term contract with Gunners as Real Madrid dealt blow

0 16

Arsenal academy graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly has agreed a new long-term contract with the North London club, with an official announcement confirming the update expected soon, according to journalist Charles Watts.

The England international was a major success story with the Gunners last season following his breakthrough campaign, and he attracted Real Madrid to himself following some incredible performances in the Premier League and Champions League.

Lewis-Skelly is primarily a midfielder but he featured at left-back, making 39 first-team appearances last term, and Madrid were keeping tabs on his contract situation.

The 18-year-old was about to enter into the final year of his current contract but will now remain with Arsenal for the foreseeable future in a much-needed boost for manager Mikel Arteta.

Lewis-Skelly follows Gabriel Magalhaes in signing a new deal with the Gunners, and talks are also ongoing with the likes of Bukayo Saka, William Saliba, Ethan Nwaneri and Leandro Trossard over new contracts.

The new deal will see a substantial increase to his current salary and make him one of the best-paid young players in the world, according to The Athletic.

Arteta played a huge role during the negotiations and convinced the teenage sensation to sign the deal given his strong relationship with him.

Lewis-Skelly signed his first professional deal with Arsenal when he turned 17 back in October 2023, but it was only a three-year contract as Football Association rules prevent players under the age of 18 from signing contracts longer than three years.

The Gunners will now hope to convince Saliba, another Madrid target, to agree to a contract extension, but they could lose Ghana international midfielder Thomas Partey as a free agent in the coming weeks amid reports he is set to leave.

Saka should not have an issue signing a new deal, but both Nwaneri and Trossard could want assurances over their playing chances going forward before making a decision, with the Belgium international attracting attention from the Saudi Pro League.
