Arsenal have 'advanced' with £55.6m offer for Primeira Liga star 'furious' with his club - report
Arsenal plan to bolster their frontline with a marquee striker this summer.
The Gunners had a disappointing season in the Premier League. They finished 10 points behind eventual champions Liverpool.
The club had several injury concerns in the forward department while they were also unconvincing with their finishing upfront.
Arsenal need a genuine goalscoring striker, and A Bola (page 16) claim that the club are still exploring a deal for Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres.
The Gunners have ‘advanced’ with £47 million plus £8.6m in add-ons for the striker, but Sporting CP’s demands are much higher.
Mikel Arteta’s side are yet to make a formal offer on the table, but Sporting CP have no plans to sell their prized asset for less than £68.4m.
Gyokeres is ‘furious’ with the Portuguese champions as he anticipated to leave for between £51m and £60m, a promise made last summer.
Arsenal have been tipped to revisit their interest in the 27-year-old.
Arsenal cautious about overspending on new striker
A marquee striker appears the main priority for the Gunners this summer, but they are also expected to bolster other key positions too.
The club already have an agreement in place to land Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.
They are also likely to sign a versatile winger, a backup goalkeeper and a central defender.
Another holding midfielder could be pursued too, given Thomas Partey may leave on a free transfer when his contract expires on June 30.
With this in mind, Arsenal don’t want to break the bank for a new centre-forward. The budget seems limited at the current point in time.
Arsenal have probably set their price for Gyokeres (£55.6m) and are reluctant to come close to Sporting CP’s valuation for the 27-year-old (£68.4m).
There are some doubts about whether Gyokeres can hit the ground running in the Premier League, considering it is more intense and physical than the Primeira Liga.
As per The Athletic, only five Portuguese top-flight clubs are of Premier League standard. Some are at Championship level, with relegated teams in the League One bracket.
Despite his tally of 54 goals from 52 games last term, Arsenal may have some concerns over this and do not want to spend over the odds to purchase the Swede.
Meanwhile, the Gunners are not making any progress for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko either. They are reluctant to pay between £68.4m and £85.5m for the 22-year-old.
No formal offer has been made for the Slovenian. Arsenal have yet to fully agree on personal terms too.
Judging by this, the striker saga could go on for some time with no resolution. Hopefully, the club can reach an agreement for Gyokeres or Sesko before the start of pre-season
