Barca boss big admirer of Arsenal star who played 52 times this term, talks ongoing with his agent over move
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is a big admirer of Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey, and the La Liga club have opened talks with his representatives over a summer deal, according to the Sun.
The Ghana international, who played 52 games across all competitions for the Gunners this season, is out of contract at the end of this month and could become a free agent if he does not sign a new contract.
Partey and Arsenal are in talks over an extension, but both parties have been unable to reach an agreement, which has given Barca and his former club Atletico Madrid an encouragement.
The North London club are closing in on a move for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, and the Spain international is expected to walk straight into their starting XI.
Partey will likely no longer be a regular name in the Arsenal line-up when Zubimendi arrives, but manager Mikel Arteta still wants to hold on to him given his versatility, quality and huge experience.
The 31-year-old wants a deal that does not require him to take a significant pay cut and one which reflects his status as one of the club’s most important players, but both parties are still hoping to reach a compromise.
Barca have now made a serious move and are keeping the pressure on, but Saudi Pro League clubs are also interested in recruiting his services.
It remains to be seen whether the Spanish club can tempt Partey to return to La Liga with a better salary, but he will be getting a signing-on fee if he opts to join them and the chance to win regular silverware, which could be appealing.
He has won just the 2023 FA Community Shield since joining the Gunners in the summer of 2020, and he may need to be convinced they are capable of delivering major silverware going forward for him to commit his future to them.
