‘The biggest compliment…’ - Gary Neville blown away by Arsenal star after he solved one problem at the club
Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have both showered praise on Arsenal academy graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly after his breakout campaign with the Gunners, naming him as their best young player in the Premier League this term.
Despite primarily being a midfielder, the 18-year-old made his debut for the North London club last September as a defender and has since played 37 times across all competitions this season.
Lewis-Skelly has established himself as a regular player for Arsenal despite his relative lack of experience, which has left both Neville and Carragher impressed.
“It [left-back] been a massive problem position for Arsenal; Tierney, Zinchenko, Kiwior has played there,” Neville said.
“He’s gone in there and has made it look like he’s always been there. That’s the biggest compliment you can give a young player.”
The former Manchester United captain opted for Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez in his team of the season ahead of the versatile Arsenal star, but Carragher picked him and has explained why.
“If you’re 20, 21, that’s young – but he’s only 18,” he said.
“That’s proper young; you’re a baby. Winning Young Player of the Season is something that Michael Owen did or maybe Wayne Rooney – absolute superstars.
“The reason I went for him was because of how well he’s played in big games that I’ve watched, against Man City, against Liverpool, in the Bernabeu. It was five or six performances in big venues.”
Surprisingly, the teenage sensation was not nominated for the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season award, with 24-year-old William Saliba getting the nod from Arsenal.
Lewis-Skelly has enough time to get the individual awards going forward, and he will be desperate to help his boyhood club win the Premier League title next season.
He has performed well at left-back but will be hoping to break into the Gunners midfield next season given it is his preferred role, and it will be intriguing to see how that goes.
