Carragher warns Arsenal could lose key duo without silverware
Former England international Jamie Carragher expressed concerns on Sky Sports about Arsenal’s future if they do not end their trophy drought soon.
Arsenal are on track to finish another season without silverware after their Champions League semi-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
They also fell short in the Premier League title race despite being widely tipped to win it earlier this term.
This latest setback has sparked debates about the club’s direction under Mikel Arteta and what lies ahead for key players.
Carragher has now given his thoughts on the situation, speaking about two of the club’s most important stars.
He believes the ongoing trophy struggles could impact the players’ mindset, especially Declan Rice.
Carragher praises Rice, warns about future
Carragher was praised for Rice, who joined Arsenal from West Ham United in 2023.
“He’s been Arsenal’s best player this season,” said Carragher.
Despite Rice’s performances, Carragher warned that a lack of trophies could create doubt for the midfielder.
“I’m not saying he’d give it another 12 months, but maybe those doubts will be starting to creep in after another 12 months [without a trophy],” he added.
Carragher then spoke about William Saliba, who has drawn interest from Real Madrid.
“It might be a little bit different for someone like Saliba, who has been there a little bit longer and is desperate to get his hands on some silverware,” Carragher said.
Carragher believes Arteta’s squad are close to success, but warned that the final step could be the hardest.
“Arsenal will feel like they’re really close, and they are very, very close,” he said. “But we all know, as players ourselves, that the last step is the biggest one.”
With pressure increasing on the manager and players, the club will be busy during the summer transfer window.
Arsenal must address their key weaknesses if they want to win a major trophy next season.
