David Ornstein: Andrea Berta in discussions with camp of Arsenal star as suitors circle

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has held discussions with William Saliba’s camp in an effort to extend his stay beyond 2027, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.

The Gunners have opened talks about a new contract for the French centre-back amid reported interest from Real Madrid, hoping to end any doubt over his future.

Saliba also has other suitors apart from Madrid, but Arsenal want him to remain with them for as long as possible given his impressive form in recent seasons.

The North London club have yet to table an offer to the 24-year-old, but talks are ongoing and they will need to convince him with fresh terms that reflect his status as one of the best centre-backs in England and beyond.

Missing out on a place in the final of the Champions League is a huge blow for Arsenal and the ambitions of Saliba, and manager Mikel Arteta will need to convince him and other stars that committing their futures to the club is the best for them.

Failure to get him to sign an extension before the end of 2025 will put the Gunners under plenty of pressure as that might mean selling him next summer to avoid losing him for free.

Madrid will be keeping tabs on the situation and will be hoping to land him for a cheap fee next term or free in 2027, and Arsenal have to find a solution to this potential conundrum.

The Gunners have failed to win a major trophy in the last five campaigns, which could get Saliba and others worried, and Madrid have a chance of tempting him if nothing changes heading into next season.
