Khayon Edwards nominated for PL2 Player of the Season award
Arsenal forward Khayon Edwards has been nominated for the Premier League 2 Player of the Season award.
Edwards was nominated alongside Chelsea’s Donnell McNeilly, Manchester City duo Emilio Lawrence and Jahmai Simpson-Pusey.
West Ham United’s Finlay Herrick and Lewis Orford, Fulham’s Callum Osmand, and Crystal Palace’s Hindolo Mustapha are the other nominees.
The winner will be announced at the Premier League Academy Awards next Tuesday.
Edwards was in great form this season, contributing 10 goals and three assists. He also registered two goals in the play-off, scoring in the victory over Newcastle United and the defeat to Manchester City.
The Jamaican forward ended the season as the highest top scorer for Mehmet Ali’s side.
Reiss Nelson is the first and only Arsenal player to have won the award. He won it in the 2017/2018 season after helping the club win the defunct Premier League 2 Division 1 title.
Edwards faces stiff competition to repeat Nelson’s feat
The 21-year-old forward faces tough competition from other nominees to join Nelson as one of Arsenal’s players to have won the award.
Chelsea’s McNeilly finished the season as the division’s top scorer with 12 goals and added another in the play-offs. He poses a significant threat to Edwards’ chances of winning.
Osmand is another strong contender. He was named the division’s Player of the Month for November and ended the regular season with 10 goals and four assists.
Mustapha registered 11 goal involvements during the regular season and has added three more for Palace in the play-offs.
Lawrence stood out for City with 14 goal contributions in 18 games, while Simpson-Pusey has been solid in defence. Both have a strong chance of winning the award.
Orford also impressed for the Hammers with 10 goal involvements in 17 games. He assisted their only goal in Monday’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester United.
