Arsenal step up chase for striker Andrea Berta has always wanted
Arsenal are planning a move for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer to fix their long-standing striker issue.
Manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta are focused on signing a new number nine.
The Telegraph claims Arsenal have now made Gyokeres their main target ahead of the summer window.
The club has had a frustrating season, trailing Liverpool in the Premier League and losing in the semi-finals of the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain.
Arteta’s squad needs a striker. They travelled to Paris for the crucial second leg with only Nathan Butler-Oyedeji available in attack.
Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, who have played in that role, have struggled to deliver consistently when leading the line.
Arsenal had initially listed Alexander Isak as their top option, but the huge fee Newcastle United are likely to demand changed that.
With Isak possibly out of reach, the club have turned to international teammate Gyokeres.
Arsenal Look to Beat United in Race for Gyokeres
The 26-year-old is open to joining the Gunners in the upcoming transfer window.
Manchester United are also interested in the Sporting forward. However, he will only consider a move if they can offer Champions League football.
That has given Arsenal the advantage, as they are expected to qualify for the competition again next season.
Berta will play a key role in the deal, as he has long admired Gyokeres. While at Atletico Madrid, he reportedly tried to sign the Swedish striker before he moved to Portugal.
Gyokeres has been in brilliant form, bagging 52 goals and 12 assists across all competitions this season.
His signing would add real firepower to Arsenal’s attack and help fix their most pressing problem ahead of next season.
