Arsenal handed massive blow ahead of Champions League semi final second leg vs PSG as key injury news emerges
Paris Saint-Germain have received a timely boost that spells trouble for Arsenal ahead of their Champions League semi-final second leg.
Both sides will reconvene at Parc des Princes for the crucial tie decider, and PSG head coach Luis Enrique has confirmed that Ousmane Dembele will be available.
Dembele, who is a serious contender for the Ballon d’Or, broke the deadlock after just four minutes in the first leg but limped off in the 70th minute.
He was replaced by Bradley Barcola but turned out to be the match-winner at the Emirates Stadium.
Dembele’s setback has been a major talking point. His recovery had been closely watched after he pulled up with a hamstring issue, but he has returned to full training and is in contention to start on Tuesday night.
The France international was handed a breather over the weekend as PSG lost 2-1 to Champions League hopefuls RC Strasbourg.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference (via RMC Sport), Enrique said “he [Dembele] has been training with the squad for two days. He will be available tomorrow.”
Dembele’s return is bad news for Arsenal. The 27-year-old is spearheading PSG’s push for a maiden Champions League title.
He has notched eight goals and three assists in 13 Champions League games, including the match-winner at the Emirates.
News of his injury gave Arsenal a glimmer of hope as they look to turn things around. But it’s now clear that will be easier said than done.
Arsenal looked bereft of cutting edge in attack. They created chances but failed to convert any. The Gunners will have to pull out all the stops in France, but the odds are stacked against them.
Dembele has 28 goals to his name this season. His recovery is anything but welcome, although he’s not the only one who can cause Arsenal plenty of trouble.
Mikel Arteta’s side have to bring the heat to salvage their Champions League hopes. If not, they’ll be heading for another trophyless campaign despite kicking off the season with plenty of promise.
