Arsenal are "well positioned" to sign £60m striker as Chelsea enter race, hat-trick tonight - report
Arsenal are well positioned to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres but may need to be wary of interest from Chelsea, according to A Bola.
The Sweden international has been sensational since his move to Sporting CP from Championship side Coventry City in the summer of 2023.
The 26-year-old netted 43 goals and provided 15 assists from 50 appearances last season.
He has surpassed the feat with 47 goals and 11 assists from 46 appearances this campaign.
A Bola today claim that Arsenal are ‘well positioned’ to sign the highly-rated striker, and they are ‘prepared to attack’ for his signature soon.
Gyokeres has the Gunners as one of his ‘preferred destinations’, but Chelsea have not given up on pursuing his services in the next transfer window.
The Blues recently beat Manchester United to the signing of Sporting CP wonderkid Geovany Quenda and are aiming to do something similar.
Gyokeres has a £86 million release clause in his contract, but he has a gentleman’s agreement to leave the Portuguese giants for £60m this summer.
Arsenal should be favourites to purchase Gyokeres
Chelsea have been a roadblock for the Gunners in the past. The Blues hijacked the club’s pursuit of Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023.
The decision proved a blessing in disguise for Arsenal. The club ended up purchasing Leandro Trossard, who has managed 46 goal involvements in 116 matches.
The Blues are now on the trail of Gyokeres. They have a good working relationship with Sporting CP, having agreed to sign Quenda and Dario Essugo lately.
Despite this, we believe Arsenal will have the upper hand for Gyokeres. The Swede may prefer joining a Champions League club capable of challenging for major trophies.
The Blues are presently sixth in the league and must finish in the top five to qualify for the Champions League next term.
With games against Liverpool, Newcastle United and Manchester United to come, they may struggle to break into the top five.
Arsenal could finish runners-up in the league title race for the third-straight campaign, but there has been steady progress made.
The Gunners have not been at their best in the top flight this season amid injuries and dubious refereeing decisions.
However, they have exceeded expectations by reaching the last four of the Champions League.
Gyokeres, who has netted a hat-trick tonight for Sporting CP, should be tempted to join the Gunners over the Blues.
