7 duels won, 3 goals, 2 chances created: Arsenal should now sign £60m striker before Chelsea - opinion

0 1

Arsenal are preparing for a busy summer transfer window, and a marquee striker should be the top priority for manager Mikel Arteta.

The club have struggled in the Premier League this campaign due to injuries and dubious refereeing decisions. They have also lacked the cutting edge upfront.

Kai Havertz fared well before his hamstring injury with 15 goals, but the German was guilty of squandering big scoring chances in multiple appearances.

Arsenal need an upgrade ahead of next season and David Ornstein has confirmed that the club have a strong interest in signing Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP.

The 26-year-old has a gentleman’s agreement to leave Sporting CP for £60 million. In our view, Arsenal must beat London rivals Chelsea to the Swede’s signature. The Blues have recently joined the race.

Gyokeres was exceptional for Sporting CP in his debut campaign, with 43 goals and 15 assists from 50 games. He has carried over the form this term with 47 goals and 11 assists from 46 outings.

The striker bagged his fifth hat-trick of the campaign in a 3-1 Primeira Liga win over Moreirense last night.

Gyokeres opened the scoring with a right-footed shot before bagging his second on the counter-attack. He clinched his hat-trick by scoring from a direct free-kick before the hour mark.

Aside from his goals, he had 39 touches in the game with 18 successful passes. He won seven duels and also created two chances for his teammates. Gyokeres is undoubtedly in the form of his life.

It appears a no-brainer decision for the Gunners to bring him to the Premier League. He is a perfect modern striker with mobility, physical presence, creativity and a superb goalscoring record.

Gyokeres has been impressed by Arsenal after initial talks with sporting director Andrea Berta. A deal could be straightforward, particularly with the club’s progress in the Champions League.

Arsenal recently outclassed Real Madrid (5-1 agg) to make the last four of the competition.
