Sports Briefs: TL boys, Redwood girls advance to water polo semis

Senior Harley Haveman powered in six goals to lead No. 4 seed Terra Linda High to a 16-10 victory over No. 5 San Marin (15-9, 5-4) in Tuesday’s opening round of the MCAL boys water polo playoffs at Archie Williams High.

Trojans senior Cameron Hellar scored five goals to go with four assists and four blocks, while junior Colby Ralls had three goals. Senior Finn Snekkevik had four assists and a goal, while sophomore Ethan Minnich had three assists and a goal.

The Trojans (13-8, 6-3) will face  No. 1 Redwood in Thursday’s semifinals.

• No. 3 Archie Williams scored a 19-6 victory over No. 6 Marin Catholic in Tuesday’s opening round of the MCAL playoffs. Nate Greenberg led the Peregrine Falcons (12-12, 6-2) with five goals, while Nolan Anderson had four goals. Blake Baxley had three goals for the Falcons and Beckett Kaye had two goals. Marin Catholic (10-10, 5-5) was led by Nikolai Fedoroff with three goals and Beau Panzica with two goals. TheFalcons will play No. 2 Tam High on Thursday at 7:45 p.m. at Archie Williams High School.

Girls water polo

Redwood High, the fourth seed, advanced to the MCAL semifinals with a 14-6 victory over No. 5 San Marin on Tuesday at Archie Williams High. The Giants (16-5, 7-2) will face No. 1 Archie Williams in Thursday’s semis. No. 3 Marin Academy advanced with a 16-6 victory over No. 6 Marin Catholic in Tuesday’s other first-round girls game. Marin Academy will play No. 2 Tam on Thursday.

Field hockey

Senior Cece Biernat netted a pair of goals to lift No. 3 Marin Catholic past No. 6 Convent, 4-1, in Tuesday’s first-round MCAL playoffs. The win gives the Wildcats (13-2-4, 10-2-4) a rematch with No. 2 seed Tam in Wednesday’s semifinals. Tam and Marin Catholic twice played to a 1-1 tie in the regular season. Top-seeded Redwood will host either No. 4 Lick-Wilmerding or No. 5 University in Wednesday’s other semifinal. The MCAL finals are set for Friday in Mill Valley.

Girls tennis

Despite some tight matches, the third-seeded Branson School swept No. 6 Terra Linda, 7-0, in Tuesday’s MCAL quarterfinals. The Bulls’ Olivia Shekou held on for a 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 win over the Trojans’ Emma Fiver at No. 4 singles. The Bulls’ Simone Schachter earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles, while Katie Warrin and Paloma Vano-Rice won at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. Branson will face No. 2 Redwood in Wednesday’s semifinals.

• No. 4 San Marin swept singles play en route to a 5-2 victory over No. 5 Marin Catholic in Tuesday’s MCAL quarterfinals. The Mustangs’ Devanshi Shrestha, Emily McCoy, Brooke Bested and Divya Lourdu won at No. 1 through 4 singles, respectively. The Wildcats won the No. 1 doubles match behind Natalie Martin and Charlotte Fonkalsrud, while Ellie Damiani and Caroline Hachman earned a 7-6 (5), 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles. San Marin will face No. 1 seed Tam in Wednesday’s semifinals at Archie Williams High.

Women’s golf

Dominican University finished ninth at the 2025 East Bay Fall Invitational at Stonebrae Conutry Club on Tuesday. The Penguins finished at 88 over par to overtake Menlo by a stroke. Christen Faith Legaspi tied for 12th at 11-over par after rounds of 76, 75 and 76.
