Sports Briefs: Seeds set as MCAL water polo teams prepare for playoffs

Senior Morgan Sicklick poured in five goals to go with a pair of assists as Redwood High rolled to a 21-9 victory over San Rafael in Thursday’s girls water polo regular-season finale. The Giants (15-5, 8-6 MCAL) head into next week’s league playoffs with a five-game win streak.

Redwood, the fourth seed in the MCAL playoffs, will face No. 5 San Marin in Tuesday’s opener at Archie Williams High. No. 6 Marin Catholic will challenge No. 3 Marin Academy in Tuesday’s other girls game.

Giants sophomore Samantha Riley had four goals, two steals and two assists, while senior Roxie Monty dished out four assists and scored a goal. Bea Pollard netted three goals, while Brooke Hansen, Lily Kilgore and TigerLily Engberg each scored two for the Giants. Senior Kate Morgan had a goal, an assist and three steals.

Bulldogs sophomore Alex Markwick had a team-high five goals with an assist, while senior Katie Garcia had four assists. Senior Maya Kux and sophomore Anya Kelly each had a goal and two assists for San Rafael (6-12, 2-6).

  • Senior Casey Nutting tallied five goals to lead Marin Academy to a 14-3 non-league victory over San Domenico in Friday’s regular-season finale for both teams. Elle Parisi scored three goals for the Wildcats (14-4, 6-2), while Sophia Cestar and Caroline Starrett each scored twice.
  • Tam High earned a 9-5 victory at Novato on Thursday to lock up the second seed for the MCAL playoffs and a first-round bye. The Red-tailed Hawks’ (18-6, 8-1) only league loss came against top seed Archie Williams High.
  • San Marin (18-4, 5-4) picked up a 19-9 victory over non-league foe Encinal on Thursday night, behind sharp shooting from Hazel Loskutoff, who finished with six goals and four steals. Dani Jaime Coelho had five goals and two assists for the Mustangs, while Lane Miguel had four goals, two assists, and five steals. Cate Eilerman added three goals, four assists, and two steals for San Marin.

Boys water polo

Redwood High beat San Rafael 17-6 on Thursday to wrap up an undefeated run through the MCAL. The Giants (18-5, 9-0 MCAL) are scheduled to play Menlo in a non-league game on Saturday, ahead of the MCAL playoffs, which are scheduled to start Tuesday. The top-seeded Giants have a first-round bye.

  • Tam High scored a 21-10 victory over Novato in Thursday’s regular-season finale for both teams. The Red-tailed Hawks (14-6, 8-1) have a first-round bye in next week’s MCAL playoffs as the second seed.
  • Marin Catholic held off Ukiah, 12-8, in a non-league matchup on Friday. The Wildcats (10-9, 4-5) on Thursday locked up the sixth seed for the MCAL playoffs and will face the third seed, host Archie Williams High, in Tuesday’s first round. No. 5 San Marin faces No. 4 Terra Linda in the other first-round contest.
  • Ari Hirson tucked home five goals to lead Marin Academy in a 14-6 non-league victory over San Domenico on Friday. Mats Tyreus added two goals for the Wildcats (11-11, 3-6). The Panthers finish the season with a 1-10 overall record, 1-8 in league.

Girls volleyball

Hardware was at stake on Friday night on the local volleyball courts, as Redwood High rallied to beat Marin Catholic, 3-2, to claim the MCAL crown in Larkspur.
