Sports briefs: Water polo teams learn paths for NorCal playoffs
The Archie Williams High boys water polo team secured a spot in the NorCal Division I playoffs while Redwood could be set to make a run at the D-II title.
The Peregrine Falcons, who were the only Marin team to make a North Coast Section Open bracket, were also the only local team to be selected to D-I when the brackets were released on Sunday.
Archie Williams (22-5) was selected as the sixth best team in Northern California and as such open with a road game against No. 3 seed Miramonte (16-10) at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Orinda.
Redwood (27-3), fresh off a D-I section title win against Tam on Saturday, was picked as the top seed in the D-II bracket. The Giants host No. 8 Harker (18-9) at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
Marin Academy (17-9), which won the NCS D-II title by beating Cardinal Newman on Saturday, was slotted seventh in D-III. The Wildcats hit the road for a game against No. 2 Merced (25-6) at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
Marin Catholic was the lone local girls team to qualify, having won the NCS D-II title with a road win against James Logan on Saturday. The Wildcats (17-9) are seeded seventh in D-III and travel to face No. 2 Aptos (17-10) at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Girls tennis
The NCS singles and doubles tournaments are set to take place on Monday and Tuesday, with D-I at Chabot College in Hayward and D-II at Vintage High in Napa.
The D-I singles bracket features Redwood’s Alessia Bailliet and San Marin’s Clare Zhu. Four Marin players are in the D-II singles bracket, led by MCAL champion Mirabel Arlander of Branson and Bay Counties League West champion Carly Amborn of San Domenico. Branson’s Katie Warrin, an MCAL finalist, and Marin Academy’s Eloise Sent are also in the tournament.
Redwood is sending a pair of doubles teams to the D-I tournament with Jordan Marotto/Ella Povio, plus Julia Laury/Gwenn Ricordel. BCL West champions Ann McDermott and Jane McDermott of Marin Academy are the only Marin duo in the D-II bracket.
College football
Former San Marin standout Dominic Ingrassia led the College of San Mateo to a 52-7 win against Laney on Friday night. Ingrassia hit on 10 of his 19 passes for 237 yards and a pair of scores — including a 76-yard touchdown to Jack Elgaan in the third quarter.
Men’s basketball
Nathan Ilunga scored a game-high 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting to pace Dominican University in a 68-52 home win against Cal State East Bay on Sunday.
Darius Best came off the bench to score 15 points for the Penguins (2-1), who also got 13 points from Jaayden Bush and 10 rebounds from Thomas Oosterbroek.
The Penguins trailed 34-28 at the break before turning the game around during a 40-18 second half.
