Sports Briefs: Chu powers Hornets water polo to first win of season

Hornets senior Alec Chu scored 10 goals as Novato High boys water polo split a pair of games on the first day of the Sierra Shootout in Rocklin on Friday.

Novato (1-3) picked up a 13-11 victory over Whitney as Chu scored a team-high six goals. Nico Procoppio netted three goals and Jackson Burt scored twice. The Hornets got one goal each from Jack Wien and Nolan Curtis. Novato goalie Jack Alvarado made nine saves.

Chu scored four goals earlier in the day during a 17-8 loss to College Park. The Hornets also got goals from Ran Cohen, Wien, Owen VonBaren and Procoppio. Novato is scheduled to play Lodi on Saturday morning as the tournament continues.

  • San Marin High suffered a pair of losses on the opening day of the Sierra Shootout. San Marin got off to a slow start in a 14-3 loss to Pitman to open the season. The Pride took a 6-0 lead in the first period before the Mustangs managed to score in each of the next three periods. San Marin (0-2) lost to Clayton Valley Charter in an afternoon contest.
  • Marin Academy lost to Liberty-Brentwood, 8-7, on Friday in the Wildcats’ season debut.
  • Redwood earned an 11-6 victory over Clovis North in Friday’s action at the Roche Invitational, hosted by the Menlo School. The Giants (1-0) are scheduled to face Davis in Saturday’s tournament play.

Girls water polo

Archie Williams fell to powerhouse Miramonte, 16-7, in the Peregrine Falcons’ season opener Friday.

Prep field hockey

Tam defeated Berkeley, 3-0, Friday to remain undefeated through the first three matches of the season. The Red-tailed Hawks face a challenge from rival Redwood on Tuesday.

Women’s soccer

Camille Aquino scored her first career goal to lift Dominican University past Jessup 1-0 Friday in the season opener at Warrior Field.

The Penguins (1-0) controlled the pace of play for most of the game holding a 16-10 advantage in shots. Natalie Haro had three saves to earn the shutout for Dominican.

Men’s soccer

Dominican pulled away for a 3-1 victory over Cal State East Bay to open its season Friday at the Humboldt Kickoff Classic at College Creek Field. Penguins goalkeeper Alejandro Reyes made five saves in his 24th career victory. Lex Bernier, Eric Reis and Patrick Zamora Salazar scored for Dominican.

Girls volleyball

Brooke Brumley had 10 digs and four aces to lead San Marin to a 25-11, 25-21, 20-25, 25-16 victory against Sonoma Valley on Thursday night. Brianna Nottingham had a team-high 13 kills, adding four aces. Sylvia Tuerke had six kills and 12 digs for the Mustangs (6-1).

  • Zoie Halsing, Talia Anand and Petra Rabb had strong games as Novato lost a close four-setter to Montgomery, 20-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-27 on Thursday. Halsing had 17 kills and Anand ahad 22 digs. Rabb had 23 assists, 15 digs and three aces for the Hornets (4-6).
