WATCH: US water polo goalkeeper scores buzzer-beater from opposite end of pool

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Typically when a goalkeeper is responsible for a goal, it's not a good thing. For U.S. water polo goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg, his Olympic moment came Thursday when he was the one who scored.

With time ticking at the end of the first quarter in a Pool A match against Greece, Weinberg made a save and noticed something off in the distance — an opening in the opponents' goal. He wound up and rifled a shot that went the entire length of the pool, took one skip off the water and slid by Greek goalkeeper Emmanouli Zerdevas, beating the first-quarter buzzer and tying the match at 4-4.

Unfortunately for the Americans, the crazy goal came in a 13-11 loss, their second of the tournament. The U.S. is fourth in Pool A with two matches remaining in group play. Montenegro is next on the schedule at 9:35 a.m. CDT Saturday with the final group match against Croatia at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 5. The U.S. began the tournament with a 12-8 loss to Italy but rebounded with a 14-8 win over Romania.

The U.S. was ranked No. 8 in the FINA World Rankings heading into the Games with Montenegro at No. 7 and Croatia at No. 6. Greece entered at No. 3 behind top-ranked Spain and second-ranked Hungary. Serbia won the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games, beating Greece 13-10 in the final.
