Sports briefs: Marin athletes headed to water polo championships

San Anselmo’s Dylan Woodhead and Quinn Woodhead were both named to USA Water Polo 15-man national team roster on Tuesday for the 2024 World Aquatics Championships.

Both Woodhead brothers graduated from Archie Williams High — then Drake — and played water polo for Stanford University.

The World Championships are scheduled to be held in Doha, Qatar, Feb. 2-18. Team USA, in Group C, will open play on Monday against Montenegro. Japan and Serbia are also on the schedule for Team USA in group play. The Americans have already clinched a spot in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Marin Catholic grad Toula Falvey has been named to Great Britain’s women’s team, which will compete in the world championships for the first time in more than a decade. Great Britain is scheduled to open the tournament in Qatar on Sunday, Feb. 4 against Italy.

Girls basketball

Sanaa Green scored 10 points to lead Tam to a 42-30 win against Archie Williams on Tuesday. The win was crucial to Tam’s MCAL playoff hopes as it moved into a fourth-place tied with Archie Williams. • Izzy McFadden scored nine points as Marin Catholic wrapped up the top seed in next week’s MCAL playoffs with a 54-14 win against Novato. Alyssa Spagnuolo and Brooke Spagnuolo scored seven points apiece for MC.

Girls soccer

Freshman Lauren Willard had a goal and an assist and Sabine Szylko added two assists as Tam clinched the MCAL regular-season title with a game to spare following a 3-0 win against Archie Williams (6-6-2, 3-4-0 MCAL) on Tuesday.

Willard set up Katie Lowenstein for the opening and eventual title-winning goal. Szylko assisted Maren Jones to make it 2-0 then found Willard for the final margin.

Goalie Emily McMahon saved a penalty and has allowed just one goal during league play. Tam (11-3-4, 7-0-0), winners of 10 consecutive games, will open next week’s MCAL playoffs as the No. 1 seed with a home game against No. 4 Redwood (12-4-1, 4-2-1).

• Ava Korich scored twice and Alina Franchetti added a third as Marin Catholic stayed in the mix for a playoff home game with a 3-0 win against Novato (2-8-1, 1-6-0). Sloane Carey had a pair of assists and Lana Whilborg had the other. Goalie Finn Seymore kept a clean sheet as Marin Catholic has still not conceded a goal in league play. MC closes the regular season against Tam on Thursday. A win would give MC the No. 2 seed and a home game against Branson. Any other result gives Branson home field against MC.
• Audrey Spaly and Carly Lowe scored to lead Branson to a 2-0 win against Terra Linda (9–1, 3-4-0). Imogen Brown assisted on Spaly’s goal for the Bulls (13-2-4, 6-1-1).
• San Marin (6-8-1, 1-6-0) secured its first league win of the season with a 3-0 victory against San Rafael (3-9-3, 0-7-0).
• Imogen Jenkyn scored the lone goal of the game as Marin Academy (8-5-1, 7-2-0 BCL West). The result keeps the Wildcats in the mix for second place in league. A win over Lick-Wilmerding on Thursday combined with a University win over Urban would secure that outcome.

Boys soccer

The most recent soccer pennant at San Marin of any kind — boys, girl, varsity, or JV — was a boys JV title won back in 1993. The current boys JV team is on the verge of ending that drought, needing a road win against its crosstown rival Novato at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday in the season finale.

The Mustangs, led by center back Dylan Cain and winger Joshua Calderon, have gone undefeated so far in league, with key results being a 1-0 win at Redwood and a 0-0 tie away against Archie Williams.

“What helped us out was getting preseason games against both (Redwood and Archie Williams),” coach James Salazar said. “We lost both of them 1-0 and they were both away but I think that was crucial to our season.”

San Marin could secure the title with a tie against Novato, but would then need the game between Redwood and Archie Williams to end in a tie.

“It’s a surprise to me,” Salazar said. “When you look at the other teams, we don’t have a huge group of club players like some schools have. it’s really been an amazing experience.”

College baseball

Former Terra Linda High standout Chris Delangis had five hits and Wyatt Davis drove in six runs as College of Marin blasted Diablo Valley 25-5 in six innings on Tuesday.

Delangis drove in two runs and scored four times for COM (3-0). Davis needed a double to hit for the cycle. COM scored nine runs in the first, five in the second, and six more in the fifth.
