Prep playoffs: Water polo teams learn their NorCal seeds

Water polo teams from Redwood High, Archie Williams, and Marin Academy made history as this weekend marked the first time three Marin programs had won section titles in the same season.

The victories guaranteed all three teams a spot in the NorCal playoffs, which begin on Tuesday and conclude with the championship games on Saturday. There is no state title game in water polo.

The Redwood boys claimed the North Coast Section D-I title following a 10-9 overtime win against Las Lomas. The Giants (18-11) were selected to the NorCal D-II playoffs and, as the No. 4 seed, were rewarded with a home game against No. 5 San Luis Obispo at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

The girls teams from Marin Academy and Archie Williams both got pulled into the D-I bracket and could face each other again on Thursday. Upsets would be required in both quarterfinals.

The Peregrine Falcons snagged the No. 5 seed and face No. 4 Davis at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at American River College in North Highlands. The Wildcats were picked eighth and face top-seeded Leland at 4:30 p.m. at Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose.

Girls tennis

Redwood put together a pair of upsets on Saturday, taking down No. 2 Miramonte and No. 1 Monte Vista to win the NCS D-I title as the No. 3 seed. As a result, the Giants (21-3) qualify automatically for the NorCal playoffs.

Redwood faces Rocklin in the quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at Broadstone Sports Club in Folsom. The semifinals would follow at 2:30 p.m. Friday with the championship at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Prior to all that, though, are the NCS singles and doubles championships on Monday and Tuesday. Redwood’s Jordan Marotto is the lone Marin entrant into the D-I singles tournament. The Giants are putting two teams — Annesley Krawitt/Ella Povio and Lindsey Reed/Gwenn Ricordel — into the D-I doubles bracket.

The D-II singles bracket features a number of Marin players — San Domenico’s Carly Amborn, Marin Catholic’s Maya Mosher, Branson’s Audrey Gilmor and Katie Warrin, plus Marin Academy’s Eloise Sent and Amelia Thomas. The D-II doubles bracket features two MA pairings — Ann McDermott/Jane McDermott and Ever Bogosian/Alice Elegant.

Girls volleyball

Two Marin programs remain in the hunt for state titles with Archie Williams and Marin Academy both hosting NorCal title games at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

The No. 3 Peregrine Falcons host No. 13 Ripon Christian in the D-II final. A victory would send Archie Williams to its second consecutive D-III state title game. No. 2 Marin Academy hosts No. 5 Kingsburg with a spot in the state D-IV final up for grabs.
