Prep roundup: Mitty girls water polo wins overtime thriller, San Ramon Valley volleyball advances in NorCal

Archbishop Mitty 17, Gunn 16

Archbishop Mitty advanced to the CCS Division I final after winning a nail-biter in overtime. The Monarchs trailed 11-6 going into the fourth quarter, but had cut the Gunn lead to 12-11 with two minutes remaining. Mitty tied the game with 34 seconds left, and then outlasted Gunn in overtime. 

“It was a crazy game and we are so pumped to be headed to finals,” Mitty coach Eve Okamura wrote in an email. “Our entire team really stepped up today for the win.”

Gracie Imrisek scored two goals, dished out six assists and grabbed four steals. Marissa Marcus and Zuie Jog each scored four goals and had three steals, and Maddie Caputo scored three goals and won all six of her sprints. 

Bridget Juul scored two goals, and Mia Arriaga and Zoey Crisan each scored one goal apiece. Nina Albers scored five goals for Gunn. Mitty advanced to the championship matchup with Valley Christian.

Sacred Heart Prep 10, St. Francis 2

Sacred Heart Prep is headed to the CCS Open Division championship game after it jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead against St. Francis and never looked back. Casey Coleman led the Gators with three goals, while Natalia Szczerba added two goals and three assists. Jacqueline Hickingbotham and Kiernan Hogan scored a goal apiece. Vivian Golub and Megan Newby each scored one goal and had two assists. Goalkeepers Ellison Brush and Isabella Dova combined for 21 saves. Hannah Multz and Alexandra Childs scored the goals for St. Francis. 

Valley Christian 8, Leigh 6

Valley Christian advanced to the CCS Division I title game after it scored the last six goals of the game to rally from an early 6-2 deficit. Sophia Pyper led the comeback with three goals, and Isabella Denena and Grace Herrin each scored two goals. Ann-Mei Sun scored one goal, and goalkeeper Brynn Campbell saved 10 shots. Valley Christian will play Archbishop Mitty in the final.

Girls volleyball

SRV 3, Christian Brothers 0

No. 3 San Ramon Valley swept No. 14 Christian Brothers-Sacramento 25-18, 25-14, 25-20 to set up a second-round game with Valley Christian on Thursday. Lucy Chertok had 20 digs and 12 kills, and Elle Hunt had nine kills and three blocks. Audree Vasconi had 22 assists and three aces, and senior OH Maddie Connelly had seven kills and one ace. SRV coach Brian Fujinaga wrote in an email, “The third set was a little more evenly matched, but our team hit .297 for the set and made 91.3% of our serves.  It felt like we kept the pressure on them by keeping the ball in play and minimizing our errors.”

Mercy-Burlingame 3, Mountain View 0

No. 2 Mercy rolled past No. 15 Mountain View 25-18, 25-13, 25-17 to advance in the Division III NorCal tournament. Juliana Mufarreh led the team with 11 kills, and Ava Cacao and Mia Ferdinand combined for 10 kills and seven blocks. Kylie Sok chipped in two kills, and Jenna Manuel had 11 digs. 

Sacred Heart Cathedral 3, Campolindo 0

No. 3 seed Sacred Heart Cathedral defeated No. 14 Campolindo 25-19, 25-13, 26-24 to advance to a second-round matchup with Pitman-Turlock in the NorCal Division II playoffs. Outside hitters Sarah Caulder and Evelyn Law each had nine kills for SHC, and Hazel Nelson wasn’t far behind with seven kills. Libero Angel Gumboc had 15 digs for the Fightin’ Irish, which will play Pitman on Thursday. Coach Symone Mackiewicz wrote in an email, “The team played great and came from behind to take the third set with zero subs left.”

Oak Ridge 3, Menlo School 0

Menlo School’s season ended in the first round of the NorCal Division I playoffs with a 25-21, 25-17, 25-16 defeat. Lily Kautai led Menlo School with 24 assists, Cleo Hardin had 14 kills and four aces, and Ava Wang had 10 digs. The Knights ended their season 23-13.
