Prep roundup: Albany volleyball, Oakland Tech flag football, Castro Valley water polo among winners

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

No. 4 Sacred Heart Prep 3, Notre Dame-San Jose 0

SHP defeated its San Jose opponent 25-14, 25-15, 25-17 as senior Isabelle Marco had 11 kills, three aces, six digs and one block. Mia Radeff had seven kills, seven digs and three aces. SHP’s senior setters Jillian Amaro and Erika Maas combined for 24 assists, while Naomi Watson stood tall in the middle, having six kills and three blocks. 

No. 6 Menlo-Atherton 3, Hillsdale 0

Menlo-Atherton finished the regular season 13-0 in league play after it swept Hillsdale 25-11, 25-19, 25-19 and won its third match in a row. Junior Meki Maile had 29 assists and one ace, and Sienna Morales had 12 kills and two blocks. Junior Dani Eline had 13 kills and eight digs, and Kiela King also had 13 digs and three assists. 

No. 9 Menlo School 3, Notre Dame-Belmont 0

Menlo School clinched the WBAL title after sweeping ND-Belmont 25-20, 25-21, 25-17 at home. Aaliyah Sanders and Cleo Hardin each had eight kills, and junior Lily Kautai had four blocks and 24 assists. Ava Wang had nine digs as Menlo School finished league play with a 7-1 record. 

No. 10 Palo Alto 3, Los Altos 1

Palo Alto’s 25-16, 25-19, 23-25, 25-22 victory over Los Altos capped a memorable regular season for coach Chris Crader’s SCVAL-De Anza champion Vikings. 

“it was the first time anyone went 12-0 in that league in four years,” Crader wrote in an email. “Additionally, Paly only lost 7 sets in 12 league matches; the fewest sets lost for a De Anza division in nine years.”

Senior Kylie Yen served a 12-point run in the first set to start what was described as a great all-around match alongside Maura Hambly. Setter Sophie Mies and junior Mackenzie Zhao were superb on offense and defense for the Vikings, who will learn their seeding and opponent in the CCS playoffs on Thursday. 

No. 11 James Logan 3, Mission San Jose 0

James Logan swept Mission San Jose 25-18, 25-23, 25-10 in the first round of the NCS Division I playoffs. McKenzie Anderson had a career-high 20 kills and 14 digs, while Hannah Issenmann had 10 kills. Leann Jung handed out 24 assists and also had 11 digs, while Julianna Bondoc had 31 digs. Logan will play at Marin Catholic in the quarterfinal on Saturday. 

No. 12 San Ramon Valley 3, Santa Rosa 0

San Ramon Valley easily dispatched Santa Rosa in the first round of the NCS Division I playoffs by a score of 25-11, 25-14, 27-25. Senior setter Audree Vasconi had 19 assists, nine digs and two aces to lead the team. Maddie Connelly had six kills and two blocks, and Lucy Chertock had seven kills and three digs. Sophomore MH Jenna Hunt had seven kills as SRV advanced to a second-round game against California on Saturday. 

Albany 3, Kennedy-Fremont 0

Albany advanced to the second round of the NCS Division III playoffs after sweeping visiting Kennedy. Hannah Hajnal did a little bit of everything for the victors, dishing out 24 assists to go along with nine digs and two kills. Sally Winnacker had nine kills, four aces and seven digs. One of her aces was the match point. Katie Walters had 14 digs, one ace and three assists as Albany won each set 25-22. 

Salesian 3, Quarry Lane 1

The Pride advanced to the quarter-finals of the NCS Division V playoffs after defeating Quarry Lane. Kayla Ferreira and Eva Gonzales were both critical in the attack, and coach Michaela Ahlenslager said setter Ela Lucas was “absolutely on fire” on Tuesday night. Salesian won 19-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-10, and will host Cloverdale on Saturday. 

GIRLS WATER POLO

Mission San Jose 9, Newark Memorial 4 

MSJ’s dynamic scoring duo of Ozzy Lim and Kira Clark did their thing against Newark Memorial, with Lim scoring four goals and Clark getting three past the keeper. The team captains got scoring support from Sharvi Verma and Trisha Karkera, who each scored one goal. Karkera, a freshman, also played very well on defense. 

Castro Valley 7, Berkeley 6

Castro Valley slipped past Berkeley in the first round of the WACC playoffs as Isabelle Nicole scored three goals to pace the Trojans. Alenea Loera scored two goals, and Stella Chang and Nina Henry each scored one goal. Peyton Sklut had four blocks as the team’s goalkeeper. Castro Valley, which improved to 18-7, will play its next opponent on Wednesday. 

BOYS WATER POLO

Piedmont 15, Encinal 6

Piedmont breezed past Encinal in the first round of the WACC playoffs after a balanced offense by Piedmont buried the Jets. George Stein had four goals, two steals and an assist, while fellow senior Finn Burke had three goals. Daniel Banin had two goals, two assists and two ejections drawn, while Declan Linnane also scored two goals, had two assists, three steals and two ejections drawn. Sophomore goalkeeper Luke McAuliffe had seven blocks. 

GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL

Oakland Tech 27, Campolindo 0

Jhai Johnson threw for 252 passing and three touchdowns in Oakland Tech’s victory over Campolindo. The daughter of NFL QB Josh Johnson threw most of her passes to Nailah Davis, who hauled in 151 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Payton Henderson caught another TD, and Tai’Ana Houff scored a touchdown while also picking off one Campo pass. Aaryn Alton also had an interception for the Oakland school.

Pioneer 30, James Lick 0

Jessica Tonegato was superb on Tuesday night, rushing for 72 yards on offense while also pulling five flags in a rout. Abbie Mackintosh had two touchdowns and one interception, while Hailey Martinez was described by coach Joe Bertovich as “dynamic” after scoring one touchdown, picking off two James Lick passes and pulling eight flags. Sara Maccioni caught one of Elizabeth Phinney’s four touchdown passes. Pioneer improved to 11-3-1 on the season. 

San Ramon Valley 26, Monte Vista 14

Sacred Heart Cathedral 12, San Ramon Valley 6

The Wolves split Wednesday’s double-header on senior night. Senior defender Elise Doyle had two pass breakups on Tuesday night, and Kaitlyn Bray ran for a touchdown. Speedster Onessa Yee ran for a touchdown, as did Olivia Wheatley and Ella Gunderson. Tori Petersen and Sydney Gann both had interceptions.

In the next game against Sacred Heart Cathedral, Gunderson shook free for a touchdown, and Hania Bowes picked off a pass against the WCAL opponent. 

Granada 32, Livermore 7

Isabel Moen ran wild against Livermore, rushing for eight- and 40-yard touchdowns while throwing two TDs as a dual-threat QB. Kate Brongiel caught a 20-yard TD pass, and Teagan Bailiff hauled in the 24-yard touchdown. Kayla Clarin also rushed for a 21-yard touchdown.
