Sports Briefs: Archie Williams girls come together in rout of TL water polo

Laurel Cooper was nearly perfect in net and the Peregrine Falcons drove the ball on point in Archie Williams’ 13-1 victory over visiting Terra Linda in Wednesday’s girls water polo showdown. The Falcons’ Avery Hinkelman scored a game-high five goals, with four coming in the third period.

“As hard as it is to believe, even though they’ve been playing together for quite a while, the girls are still learning to play together,” Archie Williams head coach Todd Duplanty said. “Every game, more of the pieces to the puzzle are coming together. The girls are starting to figure out how to lean on each other a little bit more and be part of a unit.”

Hinkelman, Ingrid Wahlstrom, Delaney Fair and Holly Hovey staked the Falcons to a 4-0 lead in the first period, and the Trojans never recovered. Hovey finished with three goals. Loretta Hovey, Riley Liebman and Mill Rendic each added a goal as the Falcons (9-6, 4-0) remained in a dead heat with Marin Academy (10-1, 4-0) for the MCAL lead. The Falcons and Wildcats are scheduled to meet in the regular season finale.

Emily Hinkley scored the Trojans’ only goal in the second period as Terra Linda (2-5, 1-1) cut the deficit to 5-1.

• Novato defeated crosstown rival San Marin, 14-8, on Tuesday, overcoming a five-goal performance from Mustangs freshman Dani Jamie Coelho. Sophomore Reese Cordero added three goals for San Marin.

• Marin Catholic senior Claire Cassidy netted five goals Thursday as the Wildcats defeated San Rafael, 20-7. Wildcats junior Emma Slaught scored four goals, while junior Anya Jaroszewski had three goals. MC senior Alyssa Kooy and junior Amelia Kiriakis each scored two goals. Ava Sarganis, Katherine Hamel, Emma Nevarez and Katie Lyons each scored one goal for the Wildcats. Goalie Kiki Jaroszewski had nine saves for Marin Catholic, which rebounded from a 13-4 loss to non-league foe Northgate on Monday.

• San Rafael lost host Mission San Jose, 16-8, in Monday’s non-league competition.

Boys water polo

Junior Bern Kent scored five goals and notched four assists, and junior Reed Hanna added four goals, five assists and four steals as Tam defeated host Berkeley, 16-10, in a non-league contest. Junior Andrew Sternfels scored three goals and added three steals and two assists for the Red-tailed Hawks (9-2, 3-1 MCAL), while senior Quin Concannon and sophomore Declan Murphy chipped in with two goals each.

• Marin Catholic defeated San Rafael, 10-9, Thursday to build some momentum ahead of Monday’s meeting with Tam.

Girls volleyball

Neeva Gaine and Sierra Kennedy both had eight kills as Redwood took down San Rafael 25-10, 25-10, 25-15 on Wednesday night.

The game was also notable as it marked the MCAL return of Jake Spain, who coached the dominant Marin Catholic teams of the late 2010s. Spain came in to coach the Giants starting this week.

Katie Lazzareschi had 21 assists and Harper Eaton added five kills for Redwood (19-4, 2-0).

San Rafael (13-9, 0-3) was led by Elsa Kehoe’s seven kills and seven digs. Olivia Dugan added 11 digs and Jane Stanley had nine assists.

San Rafael hosts Terra Linda in a cross-town rivalry game on Friday night.

• Emmeline Sandgren had 35 assists, six kills and five digs as Tam swept TL, 25-18, 25-13, 25-23. Lauren Widdifield had 10 kills and Natalie Stanford added eight kills. Natalia Clifford had seven kills and 16 digs for Tam (17-4, 3-1). Josie Campo had a double-double for TL (12-11, 0-3) with 12 digs and 10 kills.

• Marin Catholic (15-4, 2-1) secured a 25-13, 25-14, 18-25, 25-11 win against San Marin. The Mustangs (17-7, 2-2) were led by Gabi Ginocchio’s 13 assists and 10 digs. Brianna Nootingham had six kills and Lindsay Johnk had four aces, four kills and five blocks.

• Branson (18-4, 4-0) maintained its perfect league record following a 25-16, 25-7, 25-10 win against Archie Williams (11-7, 2-2).

• Kate Lane had a team-high 17 kills as Marin Academy held off Urban, 28-26, 25-23, 25-14. Greta Borland added 12 kills and 15 digs for MA (11-12, 5-1 BCL West). Kirsten Wang had 21 digs and Courtney Wang had 22 assists.

Girls golf

Sterling Colpitts carded an 8-over 44 for low medalist honors as Marin Academy defeated rival San Domenico, 196-221 at Peacock Gap on Thursday. Wildcats senior Cameron Colpitts came around at 48. The Panthers were led by Mill Dawson’s 51. Marin Academy (6-1, 6-0) remains undefeated in the Bay Counties League.

• Novato’s Eva Moynihan had the round of the day with a 51 at Marin Country Club t lead the Hornets wins over Terra Linda and San Rafael on Thursday. Novato edged the Trojans, 235-238, as Terra Linda’s Zoe Betts turned in a strong 48. Novato defeated San Rafael 235-267, with Catlin O Crowley’s 62 leading the Bulldogs.

• Valentina Gudino took low medalist honors with a 44 at Indian Valley on Wednesday to lead San Marin past Archie Williams, 211-221. Ryan Magnusson paced the Peregrine Falcons with a 45.
