IJ boys water polo Player of the Year: Redwood’s Charlie Mills

Charlie Mills always soaked up as much knowledge and information as he could about the sport of water polo: from his teammates and coaches at Redwood High and San Francisco Water Polo Club, or from veterans at camps or the national and international stages. While his knowledge grew, so did Mills.

Mills was a force in net for the Giants in the 2021 season, but really grew into his game and his frame in 2022 to help lead his team to one of its most successful campaigns against difficult odds. The Giants were 8-0 in the regular season, and went on to win the MCAL title, 13-3, in a head-to-head matchup with rival Archie Williams. Redwood (20-9 overall) went on to the CIF NorCal Regional Division i playoffs, but lost to Bellarmine, 12-9, despite an outstanding effort from Mills.

“This season, as it was my last season with my closest buddies on the team, the goal was to win MCAL and that was a perfect ending to complete that goal,” said Mills, the Marin IJ’s boys water polo Player of the Year.

The MCAL boasts several talented and gifted goaltenders, but according to Redwood coach Rudy Kardos, “Charlie stands above them all. There’s a pretty good gap between him and any other goalkeeper.”

Mills’ 6-foot-6, 200-pound frame helped him stand head and shoulders above most of the rest of the competition, even in the deep end of the pool.

“Charlie is a very positive individual and he’s always hard working,” Kardos said. “In previous years, there were other goalies and he was the younger guy, and that pushed him to work harder.”

Before he joins NCAA powerhouse USC next season, Mills is expected to spend part of the offseason working with the U.S. National development team.

“The memories that will last for me are with a lot of younger guys on the team and being able to coach them the way the seniors coached me and my the others when we were freshmen,” Mills said. “It’s a different experience when you’re the oldest guy on the team. You want to pass on your knowledge and experience. It’s good to know we’ll have a good team at Redwood next year with all the talented players.”
