Sports Briefs: Woodhead brothers named to Team USA Water Polo roster

San Anselmo’s Dylan and Quinn Woodhead were both named to the Team USA Men’s Water Polo roster for the North Texas New Year’s Showcase, when the Americans will take on teams from Spain and Serbia. Team USA opens against Serbia on Wednesday, Dec. 28, and the tournament continues through Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023.

Both Woodhead brothers had standout careers at Stanford, where they helped lead the Cardinal to the 2019 NCAA Championship. Dylan Woodhead now competes  in the Greek Water Polo League. Quinn Woodhead just wrapped up his Stanford career this past season as a fifth-year senior and was named to the All-America first team by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches. He finished second on the team with 45 goals, playing all 27 games.

Filling out the Team USA roster are a number of Bay Area players, including Stanford alumni Tyler Abramson, Drew Holland, Alex Bowen, Ben Hallock, and Cal grads Luca Cupido and Johnny Hooper and Adrian Weinberg.

Boys basketball

Marcos Tolliver scored the game-winning basket as the undermanned San Rafael Bulldogs beat Fremont, 47-46, in Tuesday’s first round of the Damian Lillard Classic. Conrad Chick led San Rafael with 17 points, Luke Shapiro added 14 points, and Parks Thommes helped with five assists as the Bulldogs competed with just six players. San Rafael plays on Wednesday against St Patrick St Vincent of Vallejo.

• The host team is off to a solid start in the Don Bambauer Classic as Marin Catholic defeated Huntington Park, 67-44, in Monday’s opening round to set up Tuesday night’s meeting with Arcata. JR Bosch led the Wildcats with 13 points, six rebounds and four steals. Charles Williams Jr. had a solid all-around performance with 10 Points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals for Marin Catholic.

Baseball

Redwood’s Ben Resnick has committed to Kenyon College, he announced on Twitter. The Giants catcher, who graduates in 2023, hit .250 over 14 games, according to MaxPreps.
