Marin Briefs: Roland earns water polo honors, leads UCSB to playoffs

UC Santa Barbara senior goalkeeper Danny Roland, a graduate of Drake High School (now Archie Williams) earned an honorable mention on the 2022 All-Golden Coast Conference men’s water polo team.

Prior to the regular season finale at Pepperdine, Roland posted 12 or more saves in six straight games. He currently has 455 saves in his career, putting him at No. 8 all-time in the Gaucho record book.

The third-seeded Gauchos, who are hosting the GCC tournament, opened the playoffs against No. 6 San Jose State on Friday.

Girls basketball

Marin Academy outlasted San Rafael, 41-30, on Friday. Sophie Everett led the Bulldogs with 13 points, to go with seven steals and five rebounds. Ellie Diaz added four points and 10 rebounds for San Rafael.

Boys basketball

San Domenico defeated the Bentley School, 66-42, behind the hot hand of junior Drew Morehouse, who drained seven 3-pointers on his way to a 24-point night. Sophomore Chidera Onyeukwu had a stellar game with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

After trailing 15-11 at the end of the first quarter, the Panthers defense ignited a strong second quarter run to go into halftime with a seven-point edge.

• St. Vincent de Paul of Petaluma defeated host Tomales 67-41, led by junior Sebastián Andrade, who had 17 points and six rebounds. Hudson Stipp added nine points, while Matt Kropleniki and Josh Malik each scored eight points for St. Vincent, which is scheduled to visit San Domenico on Tuesday for a Foundation Game.

Women’s basketball

Alex Salise scored a team-high 21 points as Dominican University picked up its first win of the season, 68-62, over San Francisco State on Friday.
