Sports Briefs: McCartney leads Mariners water polo to win in home pool

The Mariners settled into the grand surroundings of their new aquatic facility at Indian Valley with a 12-9 water polo victory over Foothill on Wednesday in College of Marin’s first home match of the season.

Alana McCartney led the Mariners (1-1) with five goals. Maya Hunter added three goals, with Novato High grad Rebecca Janssen and Lilly Weires each scoring twice.

After a back-and-forth first half, the Mariners’ hard-driving attack outscored the Owls 7-1 for the first 12 minutes of the second half. The Mariners really broke the game open late in the third period, when McCartney scored twice just 20 seconds apart. The first came on a pass across the goal from Weires, which McCartney powered into the back of the net with 1:27 left in the third. On the Mariners’ next possession, McCartney took the ball on an outlet pass and charged toward the goal, finally scoring over the outreaching arms of the goaltender for a 9-5 Marin lead.

Marin added three more goals from Hunter, weirs and McCartney in the fourth period for a comfortable 12-5 lead. The Mariners then settled back into a defensive stance to kill the clock. Foothill, with the odds against a successful comeback, still managed to close the gap in the final four minutes.

“This was a good matchup,” McCartney said. “They had a girl who gave us a hard time, but we played well.”

Sydney Nash led Foothill with three goals.

Girls golf

Marin Academy opened league play on a strong note with a 185-194 victory over Convent on Wednesday. Parker Rothbart earned low medalist honors for the Wildcats (2-1) with a 41 at the par-30 Fleming course. Elsa Anderson (47), Sterling Colpitts (48) and Piper Marmer (49) rounded out Marin Academy’s scoring.

• Marin Catholic picked up two wins Wednesday, with a 208-220 victory over Archie Williams, and a forfeit decision over San Rafael at Stonetree. Lexi Ferguson led the way for Marin Catholic (5-1).

The Falcons’ Ryan Magnusson was low medalist for the day with a 40. San Rafael did not have enough players to compete.

Field hockey

A balanced attack led Redwood past Berkeley, 11-0, on Wednesday. Sammy Haan, Chandi Sexton and Bella Wagner each scored two goals. Julia Morrow and Natalie Poncet each notched a goal and an assist, while Eleanor Titcombe, Eliza Ray and Amanda Mueller each added a goal.

Sexton, Justine Fisch, Eliza Bück, Georgia Bender and Maisie Peptone each had an assist for Redwood (5-2), which posted its third win in three days.

• Haan’s corner shot in the fourth quarter stood up as the winning goal in Redwood’s 1-0 victory over Tam on Tuesday. Titcombe made the assist on the goal.

Redwood outshot Tam, but the Hawks’ goalie Harper Fox kept the game close with eight saves.

Redwood’s junior varsity squad beat Tam 3-1, with goals by Lucy Jeffers, Caitlyn Titcombe and Kate Pickrel, then followed that with a 9-0 victory over Berkeley.

Girls tennis

Tam and Branson split singles play, but the Bulls swept doubles to capture a 5-2 victory on Tuesday. Branson earned deciding wins with the teams of No. 1 Katie Warren and Karis Crabell (6-3, 6-3), No. 2 Sophie Liu and Alexandra Zak (3-6, 6-2, 10-7), and No. 3 Tara Srid Haran and Laila El Kowrey (7-6 (4), 6-2).

Lina and Maria-Jose Stuart earned singles wins at No 2 and No. 3 for Tam.

• Marin Catholic won a pair of doubles matches, but Redwood swept singles play on the way to a 5-2 victory on Tuesday. Jordan Marotto, Sonya Cowan, Julia Laury and Jennie Liu had straight-set wins in singles competition for the Giants.

The Wildcats had wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, including a 4-6, 6-3, (10-4) result in favor of Payton Greco and Georgia Compagno at No. 3 doubles.

• Novato swept visiting San Rafael as the Hornets dropped only 10 games en route to a 7-0 victory Tuesday. Taylor Wong and Zoe Cizmadia both won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and 4 singles. Payton Garfield earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, while Emily Bandouveres won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

Prep baseball

San Marin catcher Cole Chamberlain took to Twitter on Tuesday to announce his commitment to play for the University of Texas.
Chamberlain batted .366 and hit five homers for the Mustangs last season as a sophomore. Chamberlain had a team-high 30 RBIs and was among the leaders in hits (30) and runs scored (27).

Girls volleyball

Ellie Corsello had nine kills and Noa Freidman-Lowenthal had seven kills, 10 digs and four aces to lead Marin Academy to a 25-8, 25-23, 25-10 win against San Domenico Tuesday. Kirsten Wang had 12 digs and a pair of aces for MA (5-5, 2-0 BCL West).

Natalia Clifford posted 13 kills and nine digs as Tam warmed up for a crucial MCAL opener with a 25-12, 25-18, 25-10 sweep of Santa Rosa on Tuesday. Wesley Slavin added 24 assists and four aces. Malia Parsons had five kills and a trio of aces for the Red-tailed Hawks (14-2).

Marin Catholic saw its eight-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday after taking a 19-25, 17-25, 25-22 25-19, 12-15 road loss against Campolindo.

Motor sports

For the first time ever, the Xfinity Series will join NASCAR race weekend at Sonoma Raceway with the DoorDash 250 on Saturday, June 10, 2023.

NASCAR announced Wednesday the Xfinity Series will join the NASCAR Cup Series race weekend at Sonoma Raceway next year for the first time in the history of the series as part of its full 2023 season schedule release. The DoorDash 250 will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2023.

“We are thrilled to have the Xfinity Series racing here in Sonoma for the first time ever,” said raceway executive vice president and general manager Jill Gregory. “This is part of our promise to our fans to keep raising the bar. And we expect several of the Cup Series racers to pull double duty and run the Xfinity Series race as well.”

The 2023 date remains fixed on the same weekend as this past June. The Toyota/Save Mart 350 on June 11, 2023 will span 110 laps and will run the historically popular chute configuration, adding to the fan experience with more opportunities for passing and on-track action. NASCAR weekend in Sonoma has historically featured the NASCAR West Series. The NASCAR Truck Series returned to Sonoma for the first time since 1998 this past June.
