Sports Briefs: Tam girls water polo ready for MCAL playoffs

Girls water polo

Tam High enters next week’s MCAL playoffs as the top seed, and deservedly so after wrapping up an undefeated regular season run through the league. The Hawks (8-0 MCAL, 15-4) held off Marin Catholic, 7-5, on Thursday behind scoring from seven different players. Maddie Uhlhorn-thornton, Annabel Smith, Abby Brooks, Erin Bigelow, Anna Plante and Madeline Townsend each scored goals, as did goalkeeper Izzy Uhlhorn-thornton, who also had 13 saves in net.

Tam is scheduled to play tournament host and No. 4 seed Archie Williams in Wednesday’s semifinals at 4 p.m. Terra Linda will take on Redwood in the other girls semifinal.

Boys water polo

Tam High’s second quarter run was enough to hold off a late rally effort by Marin Catholic in a 20-14 victory on Thursday to wrap up the regular season slate. The Hawks outscored then Wildcats 8-1 in the second quarter to take a 12-4 lead into the break. Marin Catholic came back strong, but was unable to catch the Hawks, who got five saves each from goalkeepers Fargo Barsotti and Rory Flynn.

Five goals from Gabriel Hirner and four from Quin Concannon set the pace for Tam’s offense. Hirner also had five assists. Luke Feegel, Cole Stanford and Reed Hanna each scored two goals for the Hawks, while Ty Moutafian, Zach Pollack, Charlie Peters, Aydan Yates and Andrew Sternfels each added a goal.

Third-seeded Tam (6-2 MCAL, 14-8) is scheduled to play No. 2 Redwood (7-1, 18-5) in Wednesday’s MCAL semifinals. Top-seeded Archie Williams hosts No. 4 Marin Academy in the other semifinal.

Girls tennis

Redwood and Branson were expected to take the court Friday in the regular-season finale, but the showdown between MCAL title hopefuls was postponed due to adverse weather conditions. Although most people are dancing with the return of the rain, it is wreaking havoc with the postseason schedule. The MCAL semifinals were scheduled to begin Tuesday, but the timing is now in doubt.

Redwood (14-0 MCAL) has had a solid run toward the finish of the regular season, with a 6-0 victory over Tam on Tuesday, that was shortened due to darkness.

Field hockey

Marin Catholic played University to a draw in Friday’s regular-season finale. The Wildcats (3-4-2 MCAL, 3-6-3) are the fourth seed entering Wednesday’s semifinal matchup against top-seeded Redwood.

Women’s volleyball

Terra Linda High graduate Shannon Ngo scored four kills to help Bentley University stay in the title hunt in the Northeast-10 Conference with Friday’s 25-12, 25-18, 25-19 win over College of Saint Rose. Bentley improves to 7-1 in conference play, just ta half-game out of first place. The Falcons (11-7 overall), have won four in a row heading into Saturday’s match against Le Moyne College.
