Sports briefs: Layden leads Tam to win in MCAL opener

Maja Layden scored four times to lead the Tam High girls water polo team to a 21-2 victory against Novato in the MCAL opener for both teams.

Madeline Townsend, Mariel Moore and Annabel Smith all had hat tricks for the Red-tailed Hawks.

Girls volleyball

Elsa Snipes posted a double-double to lead Archie Williams to a 25-17, 25-19, 25-15 win against Las Lomas on Monday. Snipes had 12 kills and a team-high 11 digs. Ella Heimbrodt paced the team in kills with 13 and added seven digs. The Peregrine Falcons (5-2) also got 15 assists from Olivia Dow. Reese Fraser and Sati Brewer both had three aces.

Girls tennis

Audrey Johnston emerged victorious in the most competitive match of the day, winning 6-2, 7-6 (6) at No. 3 singles to lead Archie Williams to a 6-1 win against Terra Linda on Tuesday. Ana Fatjo and Hailey Hagan also won singles matches for the Peregrine Falcons, winners of four straight. TL’s En-Ya Zhang picked up the victory at No. 1 singles.

  • Georgia Harms and Jordan Marotto picked up wins at the top two singles spots to lead Redwood to a 6-1 victory against Marin Academy on Monday. Amelia Thomas secured the lone win for the Wildcats at No. 3 singles. Harms and Marotto were strong again at the top of the singles ladder on Tuesday against San Marin, both winning 6-0, 6-0, to lead Redwood to a 7-0 victory.
  • Zoe Manerud picked up the lone win at No. 3 singles, rallying for a 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 victory as San Domenico fell to University 4-1 on Tuesday.

Men’s tennis

Former Marin Academy coach Geoff Martinez came up one win short at the USTA Nationals 65 Championships, falling in straight sets in the final. “It’s my first USTA Ball in 10 years so I’m taking home some positives,” Martinez said via text message.

Girls golf

Piper Egan shot a 49 to helped guide Terra Linda to a 213-218 victory against Novato at Marin Country Club on Tuesday. Novato’s Kiana Briggs took medalist honors with a 38. Archie Williams also competed and finished with a 245.

  • Anna Han took medalist honors on Tuesday with a 36 to lead Branson to a 163-253 victory against Marin Catholic. Aimee Yank shot a 38 for Branson while Elizabeth Liu shot a 42.
  • Lola Spendov and Sophia Raymond led the way as Tam made a 25-stroke improvement at Mill Valley Golf Club on Monday en route to its first win of the season. Spendov shot a 40 and Raymond a 42 as Tam secured a 193-203 victory against TL. Zohie Betts and Eleanor Johnson paced the Trojans with 48s.
  • Rose Malen carded a 32 as Marin Catholic picked up a pair of victories on Monday at McInnis Park, 172-189 against San Rafael and 172-186 against Archie Williams. The Peregrine Falcons earned the win against the Bulldogs, led by Ryan Magnuson who took medalist honors with an even-par 31.

Ace

  • Novato’s Sacha Laskar had a hole-in-one on No. 17 at Indian Valley Golf Club on Sunday. Laskar used a 9 Iron from 143 yards out.

College cross country

Dominican’s Jared Wright and Julianna Mendez swept the PacWest Conference’s runners of the week honors on Tuesday for their performances at the Kim Duyst Twilight Invitational on Saturday.

Both runners set personal bests and each of them ranked sixth nationally among NCAA Division II athletes. Mendez ran the 6K in 21 minutes, 16 seconds while Wright completed the 8K in 24:13.3.
